Daemon’s visions at Harrenhal turn his guilt, ambition and fraught relationship with Rhaenyra into disturbing images, then culminate in a glimpse of a threat beyond his own lifetime. In the Season 2 finale, he understands himself as part of a larger struggle and publicly supports Rhaenyra. The show leaves the precise cause of his earlier visions unresolved.

Episode 3: Young Rhaenyra and Jaehaerys

After Daemon takes Harrenhal for the Blacks, he dreams of a younger Rhaenyra, played again by Milly Alcock. She is sewing the severed head of Jaehaerys, the murdered son of Aegon II, back onto his body. It is an unsettling image of the consequences of Blood and Cheese, the killing Daemon helped set in motion, entwined with his unresolved history with Rhaenyra.

Alys Rivers warns Daemon that he will die at Harrenhal. She is a healer in House Strong’s service; Simon Strong is the castle’s castellan, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s official Season 2 character descriptions. The warning establishes Alys as an ominous presence in Daemon’s stay, but does not by itself explain how the visions work.

Episode 4: Rhaenyra, Laena and Daemon’s Aemond double

Rhaenyra accuses Daemon

In a throne-room vision, young Rhaenyra tells Daemon he is destroying what he helped create because Viserys loved her more than he loved Daemon. Daemon beheads her in the dream. When he wakes, blood appears on his hand and then vanishes. The episode never explains the image outright: it makes the dream feel tangible, but does not establish that Daemon physically harmed Rhaenyra or that a supernatural attack occurred.

One plausible reading is that young Rhaenyra represents the person Daemon once influenced, while the living Rhaenyra is now a queen he must follow. That contrast is interpretation, not an explanation confirmed by the episode.

He sees himself wearing Aemond’s eyepatch

Daemon follows a figure who appears to be Aemond, only to find his own face beneath Aemond’s eyepatch. This is Daemon as a vision double, not the real Aemond appearing in person. The image can be read as a parallel between two ambitious, martial second sons; the show does not state that this is its definitive meaning.

Laena appears as a serving woman

Daemon also sees Laena Velaryon, his deceased wife, in the guise of a serving woman. She is another figure tied to his past, appearing within a sequence of visions that unsettles his sense of himself and his choices.

The finale: Alys, the weirwood and the future

In the finale, Alys takes Daemon to a weirwood. His vision flashes forward to imagery associated with Game of Thrones: the Three-Eyed Raven, the White Walkers and Daenerys after her dragons hatch. Daemon comes away understanding himself as one part of a longer struggle. He pledges allegiance to Rhaenyra and helps rally the Riverlands army.

Finale director Geeta Vasant Patel described the experience as humbling Daemon and changing his idea of heroism from violence and self-importance toward doing his duty. In a TV Insider interview published August 6, 2024, Patel said: “It’s a guy who never meditated who meditated for the first time and felt something that’s bigger than us. It’s a guy who found God, who never believed in God.” Those are Patel’s words about the scene, not dialogue spoken by Daemon.

How the vision connects to the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy

The finale’s future imagery connects Daemon’s experience to the prophecy Viserys previously shared with Rhaenyra. Viserys says Aegon foresaw a threat from the North and the need for a united realm. As reproduced by TIME, Viserys says, “Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men,” and explains that “this secret has been passed from king to heir since Aegon’s time.” These are lines from the show’s earlier prophecy scene, not a new revelation made by Daemon’s vision.

The vision associates the prophecy with the wider story’s images, including Daenerys, but it does not settle every question about the Prince That Was Promised. The clearest point is what Daemon takes from the experience: his own ambitions are smaller than the larger danger he has seen.

Who causes Daemon’s visions?

The show does not establish a single, definitive cause for all of Daemon’s Harrenhal visions. Alys is closely associated with them: she predicts his death, gives him a drink before a later vision, and leads him to the weirwood for the finale’s culminating experience. That association does not prove she controls every dream.

The ruined castle, Daemon’s guilt and ambition, the weirwood and Alys’s possible influence all form part of the uncertainty. The series leaves the mechanism behind the earlier dreams open rather than confirming one explanation.

Which returning characters appear?

  • Young Rhaenyra: Milly Alcock returns as the younger Rhaenyra in Daemon’s visions in Episodes 3 and 4.
  • Laena Velaryon: Daemon’s deceased wife appears in the Episode 4 vision as a serving woman.
  • Alys Rivers: A living figure in the Harrenhal story who warns Daemon and guides him to the weirwood; she is not simply another dead character returning in a vision.
  • Viserys I: His prophecy to Rhaenyra provides context for the finale, but he is not a separate new apparition in Daemon’s finale vision.
  • Aemond: The apparent Aemond Daemon follows becomes Daemon wearing Aemond’s eyepatch; it is a vision double, not Aemond himself.
