Dabney Coleman, the character actor known for playing the chauvinist boss in 9 to 5 and the soap-opera director in Tootsie, died May 16, 2024, at his home in Santa Monica, California. He was 92. His daughter, Quincy Coleman, confirmed his death, the Associated Press reported.
How Dabney Coleman died
The Associated Press reported that Coleman died at home in Santa Monica on May 16, 2024, aged 92. His daughter Quincy Coleman confirmed the death. In a statement reported by ET, she said he “took his last earthly breath peacefully and exquisitely at 92” at 1:50 p.m. that day. The AP obituary and ET’s report give the reported details.
The roles that made him recognizable
9 to 5: Franklin Hart Jr.
In the 1980 comedy 9 to 5, Coleman played Franklin Hart Jr., a sexist boss who mistreats the women working for him. The role made him a memorable comic antagonist: his blustering authority was the target of the film’s workplace satire.
Tootsie: a television director
In Tootsie (1982), he played the director of the soap opera on which Dustin Hoffman’s character works. Like Hart, the character was an overbearing authority figure, helping establish Coleman’s association with pompous and self-important men.

His roles could also be warm rather than villainous. In On Golden Pond, he played a caring boyfriend—a contrast to the antagonistic boss audiences saw in 9 to 5. On television, he won a Golden Globe for The Slap Maxwell Story and an Emmy for Sworn to Silence, according to the AP.
