Spoilers ahead. In Season 12, Episode 7, “The Dream Scheme,” Larry’s ploy to dodge an unwanted favor spreads to Jeff and Freddy, while a date-night key lime pie and a defaced portrait deliver two of the episode’s smaller, sharper comic turns.
“The Dream Scheme” is Season 12, Episode 7 of Curb Your Enthusiasm. TV Guide lists the episode’s air date as March 17, 2024, and its runtime as 40 minutes. Its main comic mechanism is simple: Larry tries to pass off responsibility, and the people around him borrow the tactic—until the deception catches up with them.
1. Larry’s 3 a.m. group-text problem
The episode begins with Larry woken at 3 a.m. by news that Stu, an acquaintance from the club, has suffered a stroke. Larry is pulled into a group text with Stu’s family and friends, where the stream of greetings and emojis quickly becomes its own irritation. His reluctance to join in sparks an awkward exchange with Stu’s cousin Waylan.
2. Jeff tries Larry’s nightmare routine
Stu has made contingency requests for the people around him: Freddy Funkhouser is to sell his violin, while Larry is asked to look after Stu’s 11-year-old daughter if he does not recover. Jeff, meanwhile, sees a chance to use one of Larry’s tactics for his own purposes. He pretends to be troubled by a nightmare so Susie will think he is too anxious to accompany her to a textile convention.

4. Freddy turns the scheme back on Stu
Freddy takes Larry’s idea a step further, faking a sleep-talking nightmare to try to escape looking after Stu’s daughter. The tactic that began as Larry’s means of avoiding an obligation has now become a reusable trick for anyone who wants out of one.

5. The violin breaks, and the group text closes ranks
Larry and Freddy’s dispute over the violin ends with the instrument broken. Their maneuvering is exposed, and they are removed from Stu’s house and the group text. Larry’s scheme had briefly offered a way out; the fallout leaves him and Freddy with neither a clean escape nor a place in the conversation.
6. The key lime pie is a date-night character beat
On a dinner date with artist Renee Holcomb, Larry encounters a disappointing key lime pie. Renee shares his snootiness about it, making the dessert a small point of connection between them. The pie gag is a passing character moment, not the episode’s central storyline or a recommendation of a real restaurant.

Larry’s housekeeper, Dahlia, walks in on him and Renee. She tells him the incident has affected her willingness to do her work normally. That domestic conflict lands at an awkward time for Larry, who is concerned about his public reputation with a trial ahead.
8. Renee’s Wisenheimers portrait becomes the setup
Renee has painted Larry for “Wisenheimers,” her gallery exhibition featuring Jewish comedians. The portrait brings the date plot and the household conflict together: Larry and Renee arrive at the exhibition expecting to see her work, unaware of what Dahlia has done to it.

9. Dahlia’s alteration delivers the closing reveal
Dahlia has altered the portrait to suggest Larry and Renee’s sexual encounter. They discover it at the exhibition and leave. The defaced image is the episode’s closing visual punchline, turning Dahlia’s earlier complaint into a public embarrassment for Larry.
How the episode’s two plots fit together
The Stu storyline is built around borrowed evasion: Larry tries to trade an unwanted responsibility for one he prefers, then Jeff and Freddy adapt the same general tactic to their own obligations. Its apparent successes unravel through exposure and the broken violin. The Renee storyline uses a different kind of escalation, moving from an awkward interruption at home to Dahlia’s intervention in a public portrait. The key lime pie sits lightly within that second thread; the portrait reveal is its payoff.
