Amazon’s standalone Freevee app was scheduled to stop working in August 2025, and the company has been moving Freevee’s free programming into Prime Video. You do not need a Prime membership to watch titles that Prime Video makes available free with ads, but availability varies by title.
Is Freevee shutting down?
Yes. Amazon said in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee brand and bring its programming together with Prime Video. The announcement described a change in branding and viewing destination—not the disappearance of every show or movie that had appeared on Freevee. Fast Company reported Amazon’s explanation: “To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding.”
When did the Freevee app shut down?
The reported cutoff window was August 2025. On July 2, 2025, TechCrunch reported that an in-app notice said the Freevee app would remain accessible until August and directed viewers to Prime Video. The report did not give an exact final day, so a specific date should not be assumed. TechCrunch’s report quoted the notice as saying, “Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV.”
Where did Freevee go?
Prime Video is the destination Amazon identified for Freevee programming. Open Prime Video and search for a particular show or movie; its detail page indicates whether it is included with a subscription or available free with ads. Amazon’s November 2024 announcement said non-Prime viewers would retain access to a broad free selection, including select Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed movies and series, and free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels. That is not a promise that every former Freevee title remains available.

Can I still watch Freevee for free without Prime?
You can watch eligible free, ad-supported titles on Prime Video without buying a Prime membership. Look at the title’s detail page for labels such as “watch with ads” or “with ads”; Prime Video’s help page on ad-supported viewing explains how those labels identify titles. Availability is title-specific, so check the listing for the program you want rather than assuming all Freevee programming is free or still present.

The Freevee in-app notice, as quoted by TechCrunch, told users they could continue watching “for free, no subscription needed.” That notice described the service transition; it should not be read as a guarantee that every individual title would remain available without a subscription.
