Spoilers: Jeff wrote the anonymous “Disgruntled” letter—not Larry. The episode makes Larry look like the obvious culprit, then uses Jeff’s secret to connect a golf-club investigation, a fragile therapy session, and Willie Geist’s profile of Larry. Here are nine standout comic turns in Season 12, Episode 4.
Who is “Disgruntled”?
Jeff wrote the letter. It appears on the golf club’s men’s bathroom bulletin board, listing complaints in a voice that sounds so much like Larry’s that Takahashi suspects him. Larry’s familiar grumpiness becomes circumstantial evidence: the club is looking for a culprit, and he seems to fit the profile.
But Jeff privately confesses to Larry that he is the author. Larry calls it Jeff’s best accomplishment; Jeff is less pleased with his literary success, fearing that the club will identify him and expel him. The difference between the apparent suspect and the real writer gives the episode its central engine.
