Smoove as Leon Black, Richard Lewis as Richard Lewis, Ted Danson as Ted Danson, Vince Vaughn as Freddy Funkhouser and Tracey Ullman as Irma Kostroski. The season has 10 episodes and premiered in the U.S. on HBO on February 4, 2024, concluding April 7, 2024.
The main Season 12 cast
| Performer | Character | Role in the ensemble |
|---|---|---|
| Larry David | Larry David | A heightened fictionalized version of the comedian and co-creator. His social fixations, missteps and self-justifications drive the plots. TheWrap describes the show’s central character as an over-the-top version of David. |
| Jeff Garlin | Jeff Greene | Larry’s manager and best friend, and often an accomplice in his schemes. TheWrap |
| Susie Essman | Susie Greene | Jeff’s wife and one of Larry’s most formidable verbal opponents. Her marriage to Jeff and frequent clashes with Larry make her a core recurring character. TheWrap |
| Cheryl Hines | Cheryl David | Larry’s former wife. The characters separate during Season 6 and divorce in the Season 8 premiere, according to TheWrap’s series retrospective. |
| J.B. Smoove | Leon Black | Larry’s long-term houseguest. Leon originally moved in after his family was displaced by a hurricane and eventually settled in Larry’s guest house. TheWrap |
| Richard Lewis | Richard Lewis | Larry’s childhood friend and fellow comedian, played as an exaggerated version of himself. TheWrap |
| Ted Danson | Ted Danson | A friend of Larry and Cheryl, also playing a fictionalized version of himself. After Cheryl and Larry divorce, Ted dates Cheryl. TheWrap |
| Vince Vaughn | Freddy Funkhouser | The half-brother of Marty Funkhouser, played in earlier seasons by Bob Einstein. TheWrap |
| Tracey Ullman | Irma Kostroski | A councilwoman returning from Season 11. TheWrap |
How the characters connect
The show’s core tensions come from Larry’s relationships with the people around him: Jeff is his close friend and frequent co-conspirator; Susie challenges both men, especially when their schemes collide with her household; Cheryl is Larry’s ex-wife; and Leon is the houseguest who has become a lasting part of Larry’s home life. Ted’s friendship with the couple—and later relationship with Cheryl—adds another layer to that history. These relationships help explain why familiar characters remain central even when an episode’s immediate problem is small or social.
The performances are built around a loose conversational style. TheWrap reports that performers receive scene outlines and improvise dialogue, rather than working from fully scripted exchanges.
