Curanderismo is one culturally specific form of folk healing; folk healing is the wider category; and herbalism is the plant-centered practice that can occur inside either of them or independently. The terms overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Curanderismo is associated especially with Mexican and Mexican American communities, folk healing describes culturally transmitted healing systems across many societies, and herbalism focuses on medicinal plants and preparations. A tradition’s history or a product’s natural origin describes where it comes from—not whether a particular treatment is safe or effective.
The short answer: three overlapping levels
These words describe different dimensions of healing. Curanderismo identifies a culturally situated tradition. Folk healing is a broad category for healing knowledge and practices passed through communities. Herbalism identifies a method centered on plants.
That means one practice can carry more than one label. An herbal tea prepared within a Mexican American healing tradition may be part of curanderismo, part of folk healing, and an example of herbalism at the same time. A prayer ritual may be folk healing without being herbalism. A practitioner who studies plant extracts outside a specific cultural tradition may practice herbalism without practicing curanderismo.
| Term | Scope | Possible methods | How it relates to the others |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curanderismo | A culturally situated folk-healing tradition associated with Mexican and Mexican American communities | May include herbs, prayer, ritual, touch, and other culturally grounded practices; methods differ among practitioners and communities | One example within the broad family of folk healing |
| Folk healing (folk medicine) | A cross-cultural category of healing systems transmitted through communities | May include prayer, healing touch, charms, herbal teas or tinctures, rituals, and other practices | May include curanderismo, but is not limited to it |
| Herbalism (herbal medicine) | Plant-focused therapeutic knowledge and practice | Plants or plant parts prepared as fresh or dried material, teas, powders, capsules, tablets, or extracts | Can operate within a wider tradition or independently |
The most useful questions are therefore: What cultural tradition does this belong to? How broad is the category? and Are plants the defining method?

What is curanderismo?
Curanderismo is a form of folk healing associated with Mexicans and Mexican Americans. The word is related to curandero or curandera, terms commonly used for a folk healer, but no single standardized curriculum or universal protocol defines every practitioner. Community histories, family teachings, regional customs, religious beliefs, and an individual healer’s training can all shape what is practiced.
Some curanderismo practices may involve plant remedies, prayer, spiritual interpretation, cleansing or ritual, touch, massage, or other forms of care. Those possibilities should not be treated as a checklist. A practice found in one community or household may be absent in another, and the same term can carry different meanings for different people.
Why cultural context matters
Calling curanderismo simply “Mexican herbalism” removes the parts of the tradition that are not plant-based and obscures its social and spiritual setting. It also implies a uniform system where the available descriptions support variation. A respectful explanation identifies the tradition’s cultural context while avoiding claims that every Mexican or Mexican American person uses it, or that every curandero or curandera works in the same way.
The World Health Organization describes traditional medicine generally as systems of practices, skills, knowledge, and philosophies rooted in different historical and cultural contexts and distinct from, and predating, biomedicine. That is a descriptive definition. It does not establish that every practice in a traditional system treats a particular illness successfully.

Folk healing, also called folk medicine, is the broadest of the three terms. It refers to culturally transmitted approaches to health and illness, often learned through family, community, apprenticeship, or local custom rather than through the formal institutions that train biomedical clinicians. Folk healers exist in many cultures and may use different names.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) summarizes the range this way: “Folk healers may employ a range of remedies, including prayer, healing touch or laying on of hands, charms, herbal teas or tinctures, and magic rituals, among other techniques.” The sentence describes possible methods, not requirements and not an endorsement of their effectiveness.
Folk healing is not one treatment
Because the category is so broad, “folk healing” alone tells you little about a specific intervention. To understand what someone is being offered, ask what the practice actually involves: a plant preparation, a physical technique, a prayer or ritual, a restriction or dietary custom, or several elements together. Safety and evidence must then be considered for that particular practice, product, and person.
Curanderismo fits within this larger category, but folk healing also includes traditions that have no connection to Mexican or Mexican American communities. Equating the two turns a cross-cultural category into a single ethnic tradition and can erase important differences.
What is herbalism?
Herbalism, or herbal medicine, is defined by its focus on plants or plant parts used for therapeutic purposes. MedlinePlus lists common forms such as fresh or dried plants, teas, powders, tablets, capsules, and extracts. The preparation may contain one plant or a combination, and the product may be made at home, purchased, or prepared by a practitioner.
Plant-centered does not mean tradition-free
Herbalism can be embedded in a cultural healing system, including curanderismo, but it can also be practiced as a separate body of botanical knowledge. The plant focus is what makes it herbalism; the cultural setting, beliefs, and accompanying rituals determine whether it is also part of a particular folk-healing tradition.

Conversely, a folk-healing practice is not automatically herbalism. Prayer, laying on of hands, charms, and rituals do not become herbalism unless plants or plant preparations are central to the intervention.
How the categories overlap in real situations
Example: a plant tea prepared in a family tradition
A family may prepare a tea from a plant taught by an elder and combine it with prayer. The tea is herbalism because it uses a plant preparation. It may be folk healing because the knowledge is culturally transmitted. If the practice belongs to a Mexican or Mexican American curanderismo tradition, it may also be described as curanderismo.

Example: a ritual without plants
A cleansing ritual using prayer, touch, or symbolic objects can be folk healing and may be part of curanderismo, but it is not herbalism if no medicinal plant is used.
Example: an isolated botanical product
A standardized plant extract sold as a capsule may be herbal medicine even when it is not connected to a folk-healing tradition. Its cultural origin and its clinical evidence are separate questions.
Tradition, evidence, and safety are different questions
Respecting a practice’s history does not require claiming that it works for every condition. Evidence must be assessed for the specific product or procedure, the dose and preparation, the health problem, and the people using it. A broad description of traditional medicine cannot substitute for that evaluation.

“Natural” is not a safety guarantee
MedlinePlus warns that natural products can cause harm, interact with prescription or over-the-counter medicines, and do not undergo the same testing required of drugs. Misidentified plants, contamination, variable strength, and unexpected ingredients can create additional risks. The fact that a remedy has been used for generations does not show that every preparation is safe for every person.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat NCCIH recommends
NCCIH advises considering available evidence on safety and effectiveness, checking side effects and possible medication interactions, discussing choices with health care professionals, and telling providers about all complementary approaches being used. Its consumer guidance states: “Do not use a product or practice that has not been proven to be effective to postpone seeing your health care provider for your condition.”
This caution is especially important when symptoms could signal an urgent illness, when a person is pregnant or breastfeeding, when a child or older adult is involved, or when medicines are taken for a chronic condition. The appropriate question is not whether a practice is “traditional” or “alternative,” but what is known about this specific intervention and how it fits the person’s medical situation.
How to evaluate a remedy or practitioner without dismissing culture
- Identify the exact intervention. Record the plant or product name, preparation, ingredients, route of use, and any accompanying ritual or physical technique.
- Separate cultural meaning from clinical claims. A practice may provide identity, community support, comfort, or spiritual meaning without having been shown to cure a disease.
- Check reliable safety information. Look for known adverse effects, contraindications, contamination concerns, and interactions with medicines or supplements.
- Tell your health care provider. Share the full list of herbs, products, and practices rather than assuming a clinician will recognize a local name or household preparation.
- Do not delay needed care. Use an unproven practice only in a way that does not replace evaluation or treatment that has established benefits.
- Ask about the practitioner’s boundaries. A responsible practitioner should explain what they do, avoid promising guaranteed cures, respect consent, and support referral for symptoms outside their competence.
These steps allow people to engage with cultural traditions respectfully while making decisions based on the risks and evidence for the intervention in front of them.

The World Health Organization reports that traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) is used in 170 countries. In its third global survey, 67% of respondents said that 40% to 99% of their populations used TCIM. Both figures concern the broad TCIM field, not curanderismo specifically, and the survey percentage is not a statement that a particular share of people worldwide uses curanderismo or herbalism. They demonstrate the international reach of traditional and complementary practices, not the effectiveness of any one remedy.

Common mistakes when using the labels
- Calling all folk healing curanderismo. Curanderismo is one culturally situated tradition, not a universal name for folk medicine.
- Calling all curanderismo herbalism. Plant remedies may be included, but prayer, ritual, touch, and other practices can also be part of the tradition.
- Assuming an herb is harmless. Plant products can have pharmacologic effects, side effects, and interactions.
- Using prevalence as proof. Widespread use shows acceptance or availability, not that a treatment works for a specific condition.
- Flattening diverse communities. Practices vary by region, family, practitioner, history, and personal belief.
- Substituting a label for an assessment. Knowing that something is “traditional” or “herbal” does not identify its ingredients, strength, risks, or evidence.
A practical vocabulary for documentaries and conversations
When describing a practice, be precise about the level of description. Use curanderismo for the culturally situated Mexican or Mexican American tradition being discussed. Use folk healing when referring to the wider cross-cultural category of community-transmitted practices. Use herbalism when plants or plant preparations are the defining focus. If more than one label applies, say so and explain why.
For example: “This is an herbal preparation used within a curanderismo tradition” is more informative than “This is Mexican herbalism.” “The ritual is a form of folk healing; no plant preparation is involved” distinguishes method from cultural category. Such wording respects practitioners and audiences while avoiding claims the evidence does not establish.

No. Traditional use provides cultural and historical context, while effectiveness and safety must be evaluated for the specific product, preparation, condition, and person.
Can folk healing and medical care be used together?
They may be used together only with attention to safety and communication. Tell your health care providers about every herb or practice, check interactions and side effects, and do not use an unproven approach to postpone needed medical care.
