Crunchyroll shut down its comment sections across the service in early July 2024, removing comments from anime episode pages and Crunchyroll news articles rather than targeting a single series. The company said it was removing existing user-generated content to help create a “safe and respectful community environment.” Star ratings remained available, but the platform did not announce a like-for-like replacement for episode discussion.
What Crunchyroll changed
Reports dated the disappearance of Crunchyroll’s comments to Monday, July 8, 2024. The change affected the platform broadly: viewers could no longer use the comment feature on anime episode pages or on Crunchyroll news articles.
Crunchyroll’s own support explanation described the move as the removal of existing user-generated content, including comments, across “all our platforms and experiences.” That wording is broader than a temporary pause on one show or a cleanup of a single discussion thread. Why Crunchyroll said it removed the comments
Crunchyroll’s stated reason was community safety. The company said it was prioritizing a “safe and respectful community environment” while removing the existing user-generated content.

This distinction matters for anime viewers who used Crunchyroll’s episode pages as an immediate discussion space. A rating can show that a viewer liked an episode; it cannot explain why, warn others about a particular content issue, or sustain a conversation about a character, scene, adaptation choice, or ending.
Was the decision connected to Twilight Out of Focus?
The timing prompted speculation. Twilight Out of Focus, a boys-love anime, premiered on July 5, 2024, shortly before the platform-wide comment shutdown. Contemporary reporting said the title drew hateful and homophobic comments, and other coverage discussed offensive posts and review-bombing around the series.
That controversy is relevant context, but it is not confirmed as the cause of Crunchyroll’s decision. Crunchyroll declined to comment when asked whether the closure was connected to the comments surrounding Twilight Out of Focus. These benefits and harms are difficult to balance. Crunchyroll did not disclose whether moderation cost, bot activity, staffing limitations, or a particular incident played a role, so those explanations should remain speculation rather than be presented as established facts.
Where can viewers discuss anime instead?

External communities also come with their own rules, moderation standards, spoilers policies, and availability differences. Anyone moving a discussion off Crunchyroll should check whether a forum supports episode-specific threads and how it handles spoilers and abusive behavior.
