For returning fans

Do you need to watch them before Infinity Castle?
No—the specials are not mandatory. They can refresh the early story, but they stop around the Hashira Meeting material. Anyone relying on them still needs to watch Mugen Train, Entertainment District, Swordsmith Village, and Hashira Training before moving on to Infinity Castle.
The practical rule is simple: choose the specials if speed matters, choose the full first season if completeness matters, and treat them as optional if you already know the opening arc.

The timing was tied to the approaching theatrical release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle. Crunchyroll presented the specials as a way to bring viewers up to speed before the film trilogy, while also directing audiences toward the intervening Demon Slayer stories.
