Crunchyroll supports Roku devices running Roku version 11.0.0 build 1 or later, but a supported device can still run into app, network, account, title-specific, or service problems. Start by trying another Crunchyroll title and another Roku app; that quickly shows whether the fault is limited to one video, Crunchyroll, or Roku’s connection. Then restart Roku, check the network, update both Roku and the app, and reinstall Crunchyroll if needed.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings, try a different episode or show in Crunchyroll, then play video in another Roku app. Note any error message and whether the problem starts when the app opens, when playback begins, or after a period of watching. Roku recommends testing another title and another app to distinguish a content problem from a broader playback issue (Roku playback troubleshooting).

These clues narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a cause. For example, a black screen or an app that returns to the Roku home screen can result from more than one kind of problem.

Restart Roku without resetting it
A system restart clears temporary state without erasing your settings or accounts. Turning off a Roku TV or putting it in standby is not necessarily the same as restarting Roku.

- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings → System → Power → System restart. If your device has no Power submenu, select System restart under System.
- Let Roku restart, then open Crunchyroll and try the video again.
If you cannot reach the menu, unplug the Roku device from power, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect it, and try again. Roku’s restart instructions cover streaming players and Roku TVs; menu labels can vary by device (Roku system restart instructions).
Clear Roku’s temporary state with Crunchyroll’s remote sequence
Crunchyroll documents a hidden remote-button sequence for clearing temporary Roku state. It is not a visible “Clear cache” setting, and it is not a factory reset or account deletion.
- Press Home five times.
- Press Up once.
- Press Rewind twice.
- Press Fast Forward twice.
- Wait for Roku to restart; Crunchyroll says the sequence takes roughly 15–30 seconds.
If nothing happens, use the regular system-restart path instead. The sequence may clear a temporary app or device-state problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix (Crunchyroll’s Roku playback guidance).

Check the Roku internet connection
- Go to Home → Settings → Network → About to review the connection.
- Select Check connection if that option is available.
- Play a video in another Roku app. If possible, also try Crunchyroll on a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- If the connection seems unstable, restart the router: unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, reconnect it, and allow several minutes for service to return.
Roku identifies an unstable internet connection as one cause of loading and playback problems (Roku playback troubleshooting). For repeated buffering, pause large downloads, gaming, video calls, or other demanding network use and test again. A weak Wi-Fi signal can interrupt playback even if Roku reports that it is connected; where supported, compare a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or wired Ethernet, and move the Roku away from dense obstructions or sources of interference. Roku also provides Wi-Fi improvement guidance.
If Crunchyroll works on a mobile hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi, focus on the home router, filtering, parental controls, DNS, or ISP rather than replacing Roku. DNS changes are an advanced troubleshooting option, not a universal fix; Crunchyroll’s connectivity guidance discusses network-related checks.
Update Roku and the Crunchyroll app
Check for a Roku OS update
- Open Settings → System → Software update.
- Select Check now and install any available update.
- Restart Roku if prompted, then test Crunchyroll.
Check for a Crunchyroll app update
- On the Roku home screen, highlight Crunchyroll.
- Press the remote’s Star (*) button.
- Select Check for updates and reopen the app when the update finishes.
Roku recommends checking for app updates when a channel will not open, crashes, or shows a black screen (Roku playback troubleshooting). Menu labels can differ slightly by Roku model or software version.

Remove and reinstall Crunchyroll
- Highlight Crunchyroll on the Roku home screen and press Star (*).
- Select Remove app and confirm.
- Restart Roku before reinstalling.
- Find Crunchyroll in the Roku Streaming Store, reinstall it, and sign in again.
Reinstalling can resolve corrupted app state, and both Roku and Crunchyroll recommend it for relevant loading or playback issues (Roku troubleshooting; Crunchyroll’s Roku guidance). You may need to sign in, reactivate the app, and check profiles or playback settings again. Removing the app does not cancel a paid membership; cancellation must be handled through the provider that bills you (Crunchyroll membership cancellation guidance).
Confirm your Roku meets Crunchyroll’s requirement
Crunchyroll lists Roku version 11.0.0 build 1 or later as its minimum Roku requirement. Check your model and software at Settings → System → About, then use Settings → System → Software update → Check now to look for an update. You can also check whether Crunchyroll appears in the Roku Streaming Store and can be updated (Crunchyroll’s supported-device list).
Meeting the minimum means the device meets Crunchyroll’s listed OS requirement; it does not guarantee identical performance on every older Roku model. If your device cannot update to the required version or the app is unavailable in the store, continued troubleshooting may not overcome that compatibility limit. A new player is worth considering only after checking the software requirement and confirming that the current Roku has broader or persistent problems.

Check the account, subscription provider, and stream limit
A playback or Premium-access problem can come from using a different account or billing route than expected. Check which Roku account is signed in, which account is open in the Crunchyroll app, and whether the membership is billed directly by Crunchyroll, through Roku, or by another partner. Roku recommends checking the service subscription when exclusive or ad-free content is unavailable (Roku playback troubleshooting).
In particular, Crunchyroll says a subscription purchased through The Roku Channel cannot be linked to an existing Crunchyroll account and is limited to The Roku Channel. Its support page describes that offering as available in the United States, requiring Premium, and offering the Fan plan; Roku handles billing and account issues for that subscription (Crunchyroll on The Roku Channel). Do not assume that a Crunchyroll.com login will grant access to a separate Roku Channel membership.

Simultaneous streams are another possible limit if someone else is watching or the account has other active devices. Crunchyroll lists one simultaneous device for Fan, up to four for Mega Fan, and up to six for Ultimate Fan. The same guidance says subscriptions purchased through Roku or Android TV may be limited to Fan (Crunchyroll simultaneous-stream limits). If you see a device-limit message, stop other streams and check for devices still signed in.

Compare Roku with another device or network
Try the same title and account on a phone or computer, and try another Roku app on the affected device. If practical, test Roku on a mobile hotspot, bearing in mind your data plan. Read the results as clues rather than definitive diagnoses:

Decide who to contact
Contact Crunchyroll when the issue is limited to Crunchyroll
Contact Crunchyroll if other Roku apps work but Crunchyroll does not, the problem follows your Crunchyroll account across devices, a particular error repeats, or the app crashes during startup or playback. Include the Roku OS version, Crunchyroll app version, your region, affected titles or episodes, subtitle or dub details if relevant, a screenshot or error code, and whether the crash occurs at startup or during playback. Crunchyroll requests these details in its Roku playback troubleshooting guidance.
Contact Roku when the problem extends beyond Crunchyroll
Contact Roku if multiple apps fail, the device cannot connect to Wi-Fi, the Streaming Store will not open, Roku freezes outside Crunchyroll, or system updates and restarts fail. A fault involving power, HDMI, the remote, or the Roku interface also belongs with Roku support.
Watch on another supported device while you troubleshoot
If you need to watch now, try Crunchyroll in a supported browser or on another supported TV, game console, phone, tablet, or streaming player. Crunchyroll’s supported-device list identifies its supported platforms. A workaround can help determine whether Roku is the source, but it will not fix an account problem or a service-side issue affecting multiple devices.
The Roku Channel is another option only for viewers in the United States who want its separate subscription route. It is not a way to repair the Crunchyroll app or connect an existing Crunchyroll account to that membership (Crunchyroll on The Roku Channel).
