Spoilers for the 1999 film and the 2024 TV season. The 2024 Cruel Intentions series is a new take on the story, not a sequel following the film’s characters. It borrows the film’s power games and character dynamics, then relocates them to collegiate Greek life. Its finale also takes a different route: Lucien survives, retaliates against Caroline, and drives away as their conflict remains unresolved. Prime Video did not renew the show for a second season.
Is the TV show a sequel to the movie?
No. The series draws on both the 1999 film and the earlier story Dangerous Liaisons, but it does not continue the film’s plot or bring back its characters as older versions of themselves. Amazon describes the series as a “fresh take,” and co-showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher have discussed both works as influences. Amazon’s series overview
There is one notable cast connection: Sean Patrick Thomas, who played Ronald Clifford in the film, appears in the show as Professor Chadwick. That is a returning actor in a different role, not a sign of shared character continuity.
How do the characters and story compare?
The show uses loose counterparts to the film’s central trio rather than literal equivalents. Caroline Merteuil broadly echoes Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Lucien Belmont echoes Ryan Phillippe’s, and Annie Grover echoes Reese Witherspoon’s. The series also expands the Cecile role: Selma Blair played Cecile in the film, while Sara Silva plays CeCe in the show. The Hollywood Reporter’s interview with the showrunners

| Ending | Sebastian dies; Annette leaves with his car and journal | Lucien survives and retaliates against Caroline before driving away |
The setting changes, but the series keeps the story’s interest in status, reputation, power, and sexual manipulation. Fisher said it was her idea to bring Cruel Intentions to collegiate Greek life, “where reputation is everything.” Goodman described the creative priority as keeping the story cruel and fun, and focused on relationships and characters.
What happens in the TV finale?
Caroline exposes Lucien’s secret—that his mother died by suicide—to Annie, then tells him he is soulless and unworthy of love. Lucien retaliates by sleeping with Caroline’s mother, Claudia, recording the encounter, and making the recording available to Caroline through their shared drive.

At the same time, CeCe and Annie start questioning Caroline’s account of events. Annie suspects Caroline filed the sexual-misconduct complaint involving CeCe’s love interest, Professor Chadwick. The season closes with suspicions and relationships unsettled rather than with a clean resolution.
Why the last scene is different from the movie
In the film, Sebastian dies, and Annette leaves with his car and journal. In the show, Lucien is alive and driving away. He wears Caroline’s cross, ignores her call, and misses a call from Annie. Instead of repeating the film’s physical tragedy, the finale leaves the characters with emotional and psychological damage. Fisher joked of Lucien’s fate, “Honestly, who’s to say it’s not worse than getting hit by a car?” TV Insider’s finale interview

Why the ending is unresolved
The showrunners spoke about the finale while imagining the series continuing, so the ending leaves room for the central relationships to develop. Prime Video later opted not to renew the show for a second season, according to TheWrap’s March 10, 2025 report. The first-season finale is therefore the latest on-screen resolution; it is not the conclusion of a completed multi-season story.
