Spoilers for the series finale. Larry David does not stay in jail. In “No Lessons Learned,” he is convicted and sentenced to a year in prison, but Jerry Seinfeld reveals that a juror violated sequestration. The resulting mistrial lets Larry walk free—and gives the show a chance to joke that this would have been a better ending for Seinfeld.

What happens to Larry at the end?

The tenth episode of Season 12, “No Lessons Learned,” aired April 7, 2024, as the series finale. Its courtroom story grows out of the season’s Georgia voting-line incident: Larry gives water to Auntie Rae, Leon’s aunt, while she waits to vote, and the matter leads to his trial.

At trial, people from Larry’s past appear as witnesses and recount his offenses. The familiar parade of aggrieved witnesses makes the case feel increasingly like a repeat of the Seinfeld finale. Larry is convicted and sentenced to a year in jail, apparently headed for the same kind of last-minute punishment as Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer.

Then Jerry points out that a juror violated sequestration. That problem produces a mistrial, so Larry is released rather than left in prison. He and Jerry walk away together, and Larry recognizes the joke: this would have been a better way to end Seinfeld.

Why does the finale echo Seinfeld?

Both finales use a trial and returning witnesses to put the protagonists’ past behavior on display. But they land differently. Seinfeld leaves its four leads imprisoned; Curb Your Enthusiasm first appears to give Larry a similar fate, then reverses it through the juror’s sequestration violation. The callback is explicit in the final exchange, which lets Curb comment on the earlier ending rather than simply reproduce it.

The title, “No Lessons Learned,” works on two levels. It describes Larry, who has not become a more considerate person, and it points to the show’s comic method: stage the consequences of his behavior, then let the joke turn on the fact that he remains himself. The finale offers Larry a reprieve, not a moral conversion.

Was the Georgia water plot designed as a Seinfeld reference?

Not originally, according to executive producer, writer, and director Jeff Schaffer. He said the connection between Larry’s water storyline and the Good Samaritan case in the Seinfeld finale was coincidental. The explicit parallel emerged later, as the writers developed the trial around the idea that Larry had never learned a lesson.

“As we were joking about that, we realized that’s how we do this. We tell everyone that Larry has never learned a lesson in his life, and then we go on trial like the ‘Seinfeld’ finale and we just own it.”

What the ending means

The finale repeats the recognizable shape of Seinfeld’s ending—a courtroom, old grievances, and a sentence—then changes its outcome with a technicality. Larry’s escape does not suggest that the case has taught him anything. Instead, the final joke depends on his ability to spot the comic improvement to a famous ending while remaining exactly the kind of person who would make that observation.
