Its central tension is also its biggest critical question: can a story about trauma, marriage and repressed anger hold together as it swerves into increasingly lurid thriller territory? The reviews disagree. The Standard praised its engagement with trauma and guilt; The Guardian found that the murder-heavy plotting overwhelms its social themes.
What is Coldwater about?
Andrew Lincoln plays John, a middle-aged stay-at-home father who is secretly angry with his life. After he fails to intervene in a violent confrontation at a playground, he moves his family from London to Coldwater, a fictional Scottish village, hoping for a different kind of life.
There, John befriends Tommy (Ewen Bremner), a confident local whose wife, Rebecca (Eve Myles), is the village vicar. John’s wife, Fiona (Indira Varma), is wary of the growing friendship. John’s anger eventually erupts with disastrous consequences, binding him more closely to Tommy, whose own secrets make the new relationship increasingly threatening.
Does the psychological drama survive the thriller plot?
That is the series’ defining fault line. Adam Bloodworth’s review in The Standard presents Coldwater as a gripping examination of trauma, guilt and the psychological aftermath of witnessing violence. That emphasis makes John’s move and his suppressed anger more than a setup for suspense: they are the emotional material the thriller needs to keep in view.

Lucy Mangan’s Guardian review takes the other side, calling the series “quality hokum” and arguing that its murder-filled plotting swallows the examination of toxic masculinity and marriage. The contrast is a useful guide to expectations: viewers seeking a restrained, sustained character study may find the escalating plot too extravagant, while those open to a thriller that veers between domestic unease and dark excess may find that volatility part of its appeal.
The available reviews do not establish a broad critical consensus or an aggregate score. They do, however, identify the key question for a spoiler-light review: whether the psychological story remains persuasive as the danger escalates, rather than whether the series stays within one genre.

How do Andrew Lincoln and Ewen Bremner shape the tension?
John’s distress and Tommy’s confidence create the story’s central contrast. Lincoln is cast as a father whose anger is largely repressed until it becomes impossible to contain; Bremner plays the neighbour whose apparent assurance sits alongside concealed danger. Their relationship gives the premise its uneasy push and pull: John is drawn toward the person who may be least safe to trust.
Varma and Myles place that bond within two marriages and a village community, widening the stakes beyond the men’s friendship. Fiona’s suspicion matters because John’s new connection affects his family, while Rebecca’s position as a vicar gives Tommy a public role in the local community. The setup offers the series a way to make domestic relationships part of the suspense, rather than treating them as a pause between thriller turns.

Is the mix of domestic drama, comedy and horror deliberate?
Lincoln, who also served as an executive producer, described the intended blend as domestic drama, horror and comedy, with the aim of letting creator David Ireland’s distinctive voice come through in the finished series. Bremner described the premise as a man trying to heal himself in an idyllic Scottish town, only to find he cannot escape his demons—or Tommy. These are statements of intent, not independent proof that every tonal shift works.
That blend helps explain why the critical split is so sharp. If the show’s tonal changes feel controlled, the collision of family drama and thriller excess can make the village feel unstable. If the shifts pull attention away from John’s trauma and the relationships around him, the story can feel less like a psychological examination and more like the “hokum” Mangan describes. The Standard’s more positive reading suggests the thriller can also be taken as a vehicle for confronting the consequences of violence and guilt.
