Its official synopsis sets up three strands: the BAU’s pursuit of Jade and Damien, Rossi’s investigation into Gold Star, and Tyler and Rebecca’s attempt to gain leverage over Elias Voit’s lawyer. The phrase “the BAU’s deadly endgame is finally revealed” is a critic’s description—not Paramount’s synopsis—and the available episode listings do not establish a scene-by-scene ending.
Why is it called Season 2, Episode 8 and Season 17, Episode 8?
The numbering depends on the catalog. “North Star” is the eighth episode of the revival’s second streaming season, while Paramount Press Express and Rotten Tomatoes list it as Season 17, Episode 8 within the broader Criminal Minds episode sequence. These labels refer to the same episode, not two different installments.

What happens in “North Star”?
Paramount Press Express’s official synopsis describes three connected developments. The BAU tries to get ahead of Jade and Damien as they go on a killing spree; Rossi confronts an old flame to uncover secrets surrounding the Gold Star program; and Tyler and Rebecca try to gain leverage over Voit’s lawyer. Paramount Press Express lists the episode synopsis, which Rotten Tomatoes also carries.
#1 Best Overall
The BAU tracks Jade and Damien
The immediate threat is Jade and Damien’s killing spree. The official summary establishes the team’s goal—get ahead of the pair—but does not give a detailed account of their crimes, the investigation’s steps, or the outcome.
Rossi follows the Gold Star thread
Rossi’s confrontation with an old flame is the episode’s explicitly identified route into secrets behind Gold Star. The synopsis supports describing this as an inquiry into the program, but it does not specify what information is uncovered in the episode or spell out a complete resolution.
Rank #2
Tyler and Rebecca target Voit’s legal position
Tyler and Rebecca seek leverage over Elias Voit’s lawyer. That puts the lawyer’s role in the episode’s strategy, but the official summary does not say what leverage they obtain or how it changes Voit’s situation.
What is the BAU’s “deadly endgame”?
“The BAU’s deadly endgame is finally revealed” is the wording of CBR reviewer Joshua M. Patton, reproduced on Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page. It is a critic’s characterization, not a line from the official synopsis or a verified statement from the show’s creators. The supported meaning is that the episode advances several dangerous, interlocking threads: the effort to stop Jade and Damien, Rossi’s Gold Star investigation, and Tyler and Rebecca’s move against Voit’s lawyer. Available catalog information does not substantiate a more specific, scene-by-scene account of the ending, so the phrase should not be treated as confirmation of a particular final twist.

What does the episode reveal about Gold Star—and what belongs to the finale?
“North Star” is part of the season-long Gold Star story, but the episode’s listing only says Rossi confronts an old flame to unpack secrets behind the program. It does not establish the season’s later reveal about Gold Star’s membership.
In an August 1, 2024 interview with TVLine, showrunner Erica Messer connected the Gold Star storyline to the previous season’s finale: Doug Bailey hears Voit mention Gold Star and is shot. Messer also identified Pete Bailey as the fifth Gold Star member revealed in the season finale. That fifth-member reveal belongs to the finale, not “North Star.” TVLine’s interview with Messer discusses the storyline’s origins and the later reveal.
