Criminal Minds’ Disappointing Streaming Update Wasn’t the End of the Franchise

Criminal Minds reportedly lost streaming-chart momentum after Season 18—but the show was not canceled. Season 19 is streaming, Season 20 is planned for 2027, and availability varies by service and season.

Criminal Minds fans did not lose the show—but they did get a discouraging chart update after Season 18. A July 5, 2025 report attributed to CBR and reproduced by IMDb said the long-running crime drama was losing ground on streaming charts, citing data from FlixPatrol. The report described an average position moving from about 5 toward 6.6 and then closer to 7.

That sounds more dramatic than it may be. The figure appears to describe chart position, not a Rotten Tomatoes-style audience rating or proof that viewers suddenly disliked the season. And the franchise’s wider story has since become more reassuring: Season 19 premiered in 2026, and Paramount has renewed Criminal Minds: Evolution for Season 20 in 2027.

What the disappointing update actually said

The original story was a streaming-chart performance report. It did not announce that Criminal Minds had been canceled, removed from Paramount+, or rejected by viewers.

According to the July 2025 item, the series was sliding on a FlixPatrol chart after its latest season. The report used language about a move from an average position of 5 to approximately 6.6 and “closer to 7.” Because that wording is imprecise, it is safest to describe the change as a loss of chart momentum.

FlixPatrol is an independent service that tracks and aggregates daily video-on-demand and streaming-chart information across platforms and territories. A chart position can change because of viewing activity, competition from new releases, regional differences, or the particular methodology being used. It is not the same thing as a quality score, a satisfaction survey, or a definitive measurement of the show’s total audience.

The important distinction: the report suggested that Criminal Minds was ranking less strongly on a third-party streaming chart. It did not prove that Season 18 was unpopular, that the series had lost its audience, or that Paramount+ was preparing to remove it.

Why the “18 seasons” headline can be confusing

The franchise’s season count combines the original CBS series with its Paramount+ revival.

  • Seasons 1–15: the original Criminal Minds, which ran on CBS from 2005 through 2020.
  • Season 16: the first season of the revival, formally titled Criminal Minds: Evolution.
  • Season 17: the second Evolution season.
  • Season 18: the third Evolution season.
  • Season 19: the next season of the revival, which premiered in 2026.

Paramount+ presents the revival seasons sequentially within the broader franchise, which is why an article may call the 2025 installment either Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 or Criminal Minds Season 18. Both references point to the same season, but the distinction matters when searching for episodes or checking a streaming listing.

What happened in Season 18?

Spoiler-light premise: Season 18 followed the BAU as it dealt with Elias Voit after a prison attack and confronted the continuing threat posed by the Sicarius network and its followers on the dark web. Paramount+ described the season as a 10-episode exclusive release, with episodes arriving weekly on Thursdays from May 8, 2025.

The season’s darker serialized storyline gave Evolution a different viewing pattern from the original CBS run. Rather than relying entirely on self-contained weekly cases, the revival continued long-running plot threads involving Voit, the Disciple, and the Sicarius network. That structure can encourage committed weekly viewing, but it can also make a chart position harder to interpret: a title’s rank may reflect the timing of a finale or a burst of interest around a major episode rather than a simple verdict on the whole season.

Where the franchise stands now

The July 2025 chart report is no longer the latest major development. As of the research date in August 2026:

  • Season 19 premiered on May 28, 2026. Paramount+ lists it as an exclusive streaming season released weekly on Thursdays.
  • Season 20 has been renewed for 2027. Paramount Press Express confirmed the renewal and stated that the Criminal Minds: Evolution episodes are available on Paramount+.
  • The franchise remains a significant Paramount+ catalog title. Paramount’s guides describe the original and revival episodes together, with more than 350 episodes identified in the later Season 19 guide.

Those developments do not erase the chart slide reported in 2025. They do put it in context. A disappointing position on one third-party chart did not lead to an immediate cancellation or prevent the franchise from continuing into another season.

Where to watch Criminal Minds in the United States

Paramount+ is the primary official home for the revival. Paramount’s own guides direct viewers to the Criminal Minds show page for the original 15 seasons and the Evolution seasons, including Seasons 18 and 19. Readers looking to watch Criminal Minds: Evolution should check the current Paramount+ catalog before subscribing, since plan names, prices, and availability can change.

A U.S. availability check dated August 10, 2026 listed Season 18 through Paramount+ Essential, Paramount+ Premium, the Paramount+ Apple TV Channel, Paramount+ Amazon Channel, and Paramount+ Roku Premium Channel. It also listed digital purchase options through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home.

For viewers who prefer to buy rather than maintain another subscription, digital episodes of Criminal Minds were listed as a purchase route through Amazon Video at the time of that check. Digital listings are especially changeable, so readers should confirm the exact season, episode, price, and territory before purchasing.

Broader U.S. listings also showed the franchise distributed through services and channel arrangements including Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Philo, and YouTube TV. However, availability differs by season. Hulu’s own guide, revised July 10, 2025, specifically confirmed the original 15 seasons in its on-demand library; it did not establish that the Paramount+ revival seasons were included in the same Hulu listing. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise that Hulu carries all 19 seasons without checking the current listing for the reader’s market.

Paramount+ plan context

During the research pass, Paramount+ listed U.S. monthly prices of $8.99 for Essential and $13.99 for Premium. Essential is the ad-supported tier. Premium includes ad-free viewing except for live television, downloads, 4K/HDR features, CBS live access, and Showtime content. These prices and benefits are volatile, and promotions or plan names may have changed since that page was captured.

Does the chart slide mean viewers disliked Season 18?

No—not on the evidence available here.

The reported FlixPatrol movement may indicate that the show was less prominent on a particular streaming chart at a particular time. It cannot, by itself, answer several different questions:

  • How many people watched the season in total?
  • How many viewers completed all 10 episodes?
  • Did audience satisfaction rise or fall?
  • Was the decline limited to one country or platform?
  • How did Season 18 compare with other Paramount+ originals using the same measurement?

The source report also appears to use “rating” and “ranking” interchangeably. That makes the numerical claim unsuitable for presentation as a conventional viewer score. A position near 5 or 7 is not a mark out of 10, and a move down the chart does not necessarily mean the show itself became worse.

The strongest defensible conclusion is narrower: Criminal Minds reportedly lost some streaming-chart momentum after Season 18. The later Season 19 premiere and Season 20 renewal show that the franchise remained active despite that update.

Why the update still matters

Chart performance can matter to streaming shows even when it is not a complete measure of popularity. Platforms use many kinds of data when deciding whether to promote, renew, or expand a title. A long-running franchise also faces a different challenge from a new series: it may have a large, loyal audience without generating the same level of online conversation as a breakout newcomer.

Criminal Minds: Evolution has another built-in complication. The revival is both a continuation for established fans and a potential entry point for new viewers. Someone discovering the show through Season 18 may need to understand 15 earlier seasons of character history, while longtime viewers may be more interested in the BAU’s continuing relationships and serialized villains than in a conventional weekly procedural.

That makes a single chart snapshot useful as a signal, but weak as a final judgment. The renewal decision is a more meaningful sign of near-term franchise health than an ambiguously worded chart statistic from one report.

What fans should take away

  1. The disappointing news was about ranking, not cancellation. A July 2025 report said the series was slipping on a FlixPatrol streaming chart.
  2. The reported numbers should not be called audience ratings. They appear to refer to chart position, and the underlying data is time-sensitive.
  3. Season 18 remains available in the United States through Paramount+ listings. Additional subscription-channel and digital-purchase routes may be available depending on the season and date.
  4. Hulu should not automatically be treated as the home of all 19 seasons. Its cited guide confirmed the original CBS run, not the entire revival.
  5. The franchise is continuing. Season 19 premiered in 2026, and Season 20 is planned for 2027.

In other words, the chart update was discouraging, but it was not the end-of-series announcement that the headline might initially suggest.

Sources and date note

The chart claim comes from a July 5, 2025 item attributed to CBR and reproduced by IMDb, citing FlixPatrol. The original CBR page was not available during the research pass, so the claim should be understood as a reported media item rather than independently audited audience measurement.

Season details and the official streaming home are supported by Paramount+’s Season 18 and Season 19 guides. The Season 20 renewal comes from Paramount Press Express. U.S. availability checks come from JustWatch, captured on August 10 and July 28, 2026. Streaming catalogs, prices, promotions, and territory rights can change after those dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Criminal Minds canceled after Season 18?

No. The reported chart decline did not announce a cancellation. Season 19 premiered on Paramount+ on May 28, 2026, and Paramount has renewed the franchise for Season 20, planned for 2027.

What does the Criminal Minds chart drop mean?

A July 2025 report citing FlixPatrol said the series moved from an average chart position of about 5 toward 6.6 and then closer to 7. That should be described as weaker chart momentum, not as a viewer rating or proof that audiences disliked the season.

Where can I watch Criminal Minds Season 18?

In the United States, Season 18 was listed on Paramount+ and several Paramount+ channel arrangements, including Apple TV, Amazon, and Roku channels. Digital purchase listings were also available through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home when checked. Availability is date- and territory-sensitive.

Is Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 the same as Criminal Minds Season 18?

Yes. Paramount+ counts the revival as Seasons 16 onward in the overall franchise. Season 18 is the third season formally branded as Criminal Minds: Evolution.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Criminal Minds reportedly slipped on a third-party streaming chart after Season 18, but that was not evidence of cancellation or a definitive collapse in audience approval. Season 19 is streaming on Paramount+, Season 20 is planned for 2027, and the franchise remains available through several U.S. viewing and purchase options depending on the season.
