Cozy is a strong choice for a local, DRM-free audiobook library on Linux if you want book-focused browsing, remembered playback position, per-book speed controls, and a sleep timer without setting up a server. It is not a solution for protected Audible downloads, mobile listening, or automatic progress sync between devices. The latest GitHub release shown is Cozy 1.3.0, dated March 23, 2024; availability through Flatpak and distribution packages does not by itself mean the project is rapidly releasing updates.
What Cozy is—and who it suits
Cozy is a free, open-source Linux desktop audiobook player released under the GPL-3.0 license. It is built around local audiobook libraries rather than a streaming subscription: add folders containing your files, browse the collection, and listen from the desktop. The project recommends Flatpak, while distribution packages are also available. Its description as a “modern” player is the project’s positioning, not evidence of recent release activity: the latest GitHub release shown is 1.3.0 from March 23, 2024. Cozy on GitHub · Project site
Cozy makes the most sense if you have DRM-free files, listen mainly on a Linux laptop or desktop, and want a dedicated library instead of managing books as music tracks or playlists. It can also suit people whose collection is spread across multiple folders or drives. If you need a phone app, shared household accounts, or progress synchronized across devices, Cozy is not the obvious fit.

General audio players can play audiobook files, but their idea of a library is usually a set of tracks. Cozy is designed around books, with features intended to make long-form listening easier:

- Library import and browsing: Add folders of audiobooks and browse a local collection. The library can be sorted by author, reader, and title or name, and searched.
- Resume position: Cozy remembers where playback stopped so you can return to a book without manually finding your place.
- Per-book speed: Playback speed can be managed for each book, rather than relying on one setting for every file.
- Sleep timer: Set playback to stop after a period—useful for listening at bedtime.
- Multiple locations and offline copies: The library can draw on more than one storage location. Cozy also advertises an offline mode for copying a book locally when its source is on a removable or network drive. That is a local copy, not cloud backup or cross-device synchronization.
- Drag and drop: You can add audiobooks by dropping them into the application rather than always navigating an import dialog.
- Desktop media controls: MPRIS integration can expose playback information and controls to compatible Linux desktop environments, including media keys.
These are useful conveniences when listening to one book over many sessions. They do not make Cozy a media server or a tool for editing and converting an audiobook collection.
Formats, M4B files, and DRM
Cozy advertises support for DRM-free MP3, M4B, M4A, FLAC, OGG, and WAV files. Fedora’s package metadata also lists Opus, but format listings can vary by package and version; check the details for the build you install. “Supported format” is not a guarantee that every file in that container will play: codecs, file integrity, metadata, and DRM status can differ.
M4B is commonly used for audiobooks stored as a single file and may contain chapters, cover art, and other metadata. A book split into several MP3 files can also be usable, but organization may depend more on its folders and tags. The project’s advertised format support does not, by itself, guarantee how every embedded chapter or multi-file book will be interpreted. Test a representative file from your collection before moving a large library.

Protected Audible or other store downloads may not play just because the name ends in .m4b or .mp3. Changing the extension does not remove DRM, and Cozy does not advertise Audible account integration or DRM playback.

Install Cozy with Flatpak
Flatpak is the project’s preferred installation route. The application ID listed on Flathub is com.github.geigi.cozy. On a system with Flathub configured, install and launch it from a terminal with:
flatpak install flathub com.github.geigi.cozy
flatpak run com.github.geigi.cozyConfirm the application ID and installation prompt on the current Flathub page before proceeding, since repository metadata can change. To check whether Flatpak is installed and whether Flathub is configured, run:
flatpak --version
flatpak remotesIf Flathub is not listed, this is the standard Flatpak setup command—not a Cozy-specific requirement:

Fedora currently lists 1.3.0 in its package metadata; versions elsewhere may differ. If you choose a distribution package, check which version your repository supplies and avoid switching installation types casually if you want to keep application data and library access straightforward. First-run setup
- Open Cozy after installation and add the folder containing your audiobook files.
- Add each additional folder or storage location if your books live in more than one place.
- Let the library scan finish, then choose a book and start playback.
- Stop and reopen a book to confirm that its position is retained, and try the speed control and sleep timer.
- If your desktop exposes MPRIS controls, try its media keys or media controls.
- If your library is on removable or network storage, test both reconnection and Offline Mode before relying on it away from home.
Labels and menus can vary by installed build; the available project documentation describes features, but not a complete, stable menu-by-menu guide.
External drives, network folders, and Flatpak permissions
A library location must be available to Cozy, not merely present in your file manager. Network paths can disappear when disconnected, and a Flatpak application may not automatically be allowed to read arbitrary mount points such as /media, /mnt, or a custom directory. The Cozy project documents Flatpak path-access friction and points users toward Flatseal or equivalent Flatpak permission management.
If Cozy cannot see a folder, check that the path exists and the drive is mounted, then grant the app access to that location if needed. You can inspect a folder and mounted filesystems with:
ls -la "/path/to/audiobooks"
findmntReopen Cozy and add or rescan the location. If the problem persists, try a small folder on local storage to distinguish an application issue from a mount or permission problem. Offline copies use local disk space; if you later change the original book, the copy may no longer match it.

What Cozy does not advertise
Cozy’s public feature lists focus on local desktop playback and library organization. They do not advertise cloud synchronization, mobile clients, multi-user accounts, remote streaming, audiobook purchasing, Audible integration, automatic metadata lookup, advanced chapter editing, server-side transcoding, or audiobook conversion. Treat those as requirements to verify elsewhere, rather than assuming Cozy provides them.
Chapter handling is particularly worth testing if it matters to you: M4B files may contain embedded chapters, but support for the container does not establish that every chapter layout will behave as expected. For correcting tags, merging tracks, adding cover art or chapter metadata, or converting files, use a separate tool or a more comprehensive management workflow.
Cozy or Audiobookshelf?
Audiobookshelf is a self-hosted audiobook and podcast server. It is the better direction when the library needs to follow several people or devices, but it requires you to run and maintain a server. Remote access is not automatic: the project’s FAQ says users need to configure their own VPN or reverse proxy for access from outside their network. Audiobookshelf server FAQ

If all you need is to open and play individual audio files, a general player can be simpler. GNOME’s Decibels, for example, is positioned as a straightforward audio player with speed and seek controls, not as a dedicated audiobook library manager.

When playback or progress goes wrong
A book will not play
First check that the file is genuinely DRM-free, the extension matches the actual container, and the file is not damaged. Confirm that it is one of the advertised formats and try opening it in another Linux player. A container name alone cannot guarantee codec compatibility. If you need to inspect a problem file, file and FFmpeg’s ffprobe can help:

Cozy forgets your position
Check whether Cozy’s local data was reset or deleted, whether the application can write its data, and whether you changed installation type or application profile. Moving or re-importing a book may also affect how the app recognizes it. The project says deleting ~/.local/share/cozy and ~/.cache/cozy resets Cozy and removes saved progress. Do not delete these directories as an initial troubleshooting step: back up anything you need first, and use removal only as a last resort.

The project’s FAQ lists these Flatpak removal commands:
flatpak uninstall com.github.geigi.cozy/x86_64/stable
flatpak uninstall --user com.github.geigi.cozy/x86_64/stableUse the first for the system installation and the second for a per-user installation. Review the confirmation prompt and the current package details before removing the application.
