She danced in a living room, revealed a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band shirt, then cut to footage of her appearance in Springsteen’s original video. Good Morning America reported the post on June 10, 2024, when it had more than 3.3 million views; that figure was the count at publication, not a current total. Cox captioned it, “1980’s dancing… in the dark.”
What happens in Courteney Cox’s TikTok reenactment?
The clip pairs a present-day living-room dance with the 1984 concert-video scene that made Cox part of “Dancing in the Dark” history. The TikTok follows the trend prompt “Asking My Mom to Dance Like in the ’80s”: Cox dances, shows her Springsteen and the E Street Band shirt, and the edit switches to the original footage of her onstage with Springsteen.
The contrast is the point. The TikTok is a playful recreation made for a social-media trend; the earlier footage belongs to a concert video whose apparent spontaneous fan moment was arranged for the camera.
How Courteney Cox was cast in the original video
Director Brian De Palma cast Cox when she was 20. In the video, Springsteen appears to pick her out of the crowd and bring her onstage, but ABC Audio’s retrospective explains that she had been placed in the front row for that moment. The scene was staged rather than an unsuspecting audience member’s chance encounter.

Cox later described the opportunity’s effect on her career. In a 2017 interview with Off Camera, quoted by The Independent, she said the video “got me in the door to so many places”.
Where and when the 1984 video was filmed
The video was filmed at Saint Paul Civic Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on June 28 and 29, 1984. American Songwriter reports that the first night was used for staged footage, while concert-performance footage was filmed the next night. That second night was the opening date of Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. Tour. The band performed “Dancing in the Dark” twice for the video.
Rank #2
Springsteen later recalled Cox’s appearance in his 2016 memoir Born to Run. As quoted by American Songwriter, he wrote: “So a baby-child Courteney Cox takes her cue, while I white-man boogaloo and daddy-shuffle my way to the number two spot on the Billboard charts”.

“Dancing in the Dark” was the lead single from Born in the U.S.A. ABC Audio’s 2023 retrospective reports that the single spent four weeks at No. 1 and sold more than one million copies. Those figures are reported by ABC Audio, rather than drawn here from an original chart record or sales database.

The video’s dance scene gave the song a memorable visual counterpart: Springsteen’s staged invitation to Cox turns a concert performance into a brief story. The 2024 TikTok revisits that recognizable moment with the perspective of someone reenacting a scene she herself helped create.
