When Jon Meacham raised forgiveness and repentance among Republicans who supported or enabled Donald Trump, Adkins said, “I ain’t asking forgiveness for shit,” then explained, “It’s not personal — it’s policy.” Bill Maher replied, “Right and you shouldn’t have to. You didn’t do anything.” The “no regrets” framing is a paraphrase of that exchange, not a direct Adkins quotation.
What Adkins said about Trump and forgiveness
During the discussion, writer Jon Meacham spoke about Republicans who did not like Trump but wanted forgiveness without repentance. Adkins rejected the premise that he needed to ask forgiveness for his support, saying, “I ain’t asking forgiveness for shit.” He characterized his position as policy rather than personal: “It’s not personal — it’s policy.” Maher responded that Adkins should not have to ask forgiveness and had done nothing wrong, according to Mediaite’s report of the exchange.

Those reported lines convey defiance about the question of apology, but they are not an explicit statement by Adkins that he had “no regrets.” Mediaite is the source for the quotations; the available episode record is not an official full transcript, so the wording should be understood as contemporary secondary reporting.
What “relationship with Donald Trump” means here
The documented connection is political support and a television appearance, not evidence of a personal relationship beyond that. Mediaite described Adkins as a longtime Trump supporter and reported that he appeared on Celebrity Apprentice twice. The program’s archive preserves a viewer question asking what that experience was like and how it shaped his view of Trump.

The interview and episode context
Adkins appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher in September 2022 with journalist Julia Ioffe and writer Jon Meacham. The show is a live, one-hour talk program hosted by Maher, featuring a monologue, roundtable discussions and special guests, according to HBO’s program description.
The related Overtime archive entry is dated September 17 and says the episode originally aired September 12. It lists Adkins, Ioffe and Meacham and includes questions from viewers following the main program. The episode archive and transcript provides context, but not an official HBO transcript for the full interview.

The 2020 election question
Mediaite also reported that Maher asked Adkins who won the 2020 presidential election during the broader interview. That report establishes that the question was asked, but it does not provide a complete authoritative transcript of Adkins’s answer. It would therefore be inaccurate to infer or supply an answer from the forgiveness exchange. See Mediaite’s coverage of the election question.
