David Steven Cohen, the writer and producer best known as head writer of Courage the Cowardly Dog, died in March 2025. He was 66, not 58: NPR corrected its early report to give his age as 66, consistent with the Television Academy’s biographical record.
David Steven Cohen was 66, not 58
Early reports, including a March 17, 2025, ComicBook.com headline, said Cohen was 58. NPR later corrected its report and a previous headline, stating that his age was 66. The Television Academy lists his birth date as August 5, 1958, which supports that corrected age.
The exact day of Cohen’s death is reported differently: the Television Academy lists March 17, 2025, while Variety reports March 15. Those accounts do not resolve the discrepancy, so the confirmed wording common to the coverage is that he died in March 2025.
His work on Courage the Cowardly Dog
NPR describes Cohen as head writer on Cartoon Network’s Courage the Cowardly Dog. The animated series premiered in 1999 and ran for four seasons. Its central character, Courage, is a dog trying to protect his human family from paranormal events.
