Disney did announce a plan for some AI-generated fan videos to appear on Disney+, but it was not a plan to replace films or series with AI. The proposal centered on short videos made with licensed Disney characters and curated for the streaming service. Its original route depended on OpenAI’s Sora, whose web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. Disney has not confirmed a Disney+ launch or a replacement provider, so the idea remains a proposal rather than a feature subscribers can use.
What Disney announced
On December 11, 2025, Disney and OpenAI announced a three-year agreement covering short, user-prompted videos made with Sora. The license included more than 200 characters and related assets from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars, including selected costumes, props, vehicles and environments. It did not cover performers’ likenesses or voices. Disney’s announcement also said the company could make a curated selection of fan-created videos available on Disney+.
That was one part of a broader commercial relationship. Disney said it would use OpenAI APIs to develop products and experiences, including for Disney+, and deploy ChatGPT for employees. The announcement also included a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, plus warrants to purchase additional equity. Those commitments should not be confused with a launched consumer video feature: the agreement described possibilities and plans, not a Disney+ tool available to subscribers.
What might viewers have seen?
The announced concept points toward brief fan-made clips: a character cameo, a playful skit, or a prompted scene in an approved fictional world. Disney executives later connected the idea to short-form and vertical video, particularly mobile viewing. In March 2026, CFO Hugh Johnston described bringing Sora videos into the Disney+ app as part of a broader effort to add short-form video and encourage more time in the service. His conference remarks describe a strategic aim, not proof of a measured result.

Disney’s February 2026 earnings materials also referred to a planned “curated slate” of Sora-generated content on Disney+. The word curated matters: Disney described selecting some videos, not automatically adding every Sora output to the catalog. The company’s earnings commentary did not establish a public launch date, subscription tier, geographic rollout, or creator payment system.
Nothing in the announcement established that users would be able to make full-length films, unrestricted sequels, or canon stories; that every Disney character would be available; or that AI would replace actors, writers, animators or directors. The license’s stated exclusions for talent likenesses and voices are especially important: access to certain fictional characters is not permission to recreate the people who portrayed them.
Why Disney was interested
Short, participatory video could give Disney+ a more frequent mobile use case than watching a feature or episode. Fans might move from simply viewing a franchise to making a small clip with its characters, while Disney could test new ways to extend and monetize its intellectual property. Executives also described a broader ambition for Disney+ as an entertainment platform, not just a library. These are strategic reasons to try the idea, not evidence that it would increase engagement or revenue.

The proposal sits alongside other, distinct AI efforts. Disney has discussed using AI for personalization and advertising, and its advertising operation has presented a video-generation tool to help brands create connected-TV commercials from existing assets and brand guidelines. Disney Advertising’s announcement concerns commercial creative, not fan fiction for Disney+ subscribers.
It helps to separate four uses that are often lumped together as “Disney using AI”:
- Production tools: AI-assisted work behind the scenes, such as ideation or visualization.
- Streaming technology: Personalization, search, recommendations and discovery.
- User-generated entertainment: The proposed Sora clips using licensed characters.
- Advertising: Tools for generating or adapting commercial material.
The Disney+ Sora concept was primarily in the third category. It was not an announcement that the company would automate its conventional film and television production.

The plan’s major complication: Sora was discontinued
The timeline changed after Disney’s statements about a coming feature. OpenAI discontinued Sora’s web and app experiences on April 26, 2026. Its help page says the Sora API is scheduled to be discontinued on September 24, 2026. OpenAI’s notice distinguishes the discontinued consumer experiences from the API’s later scheduled end date; it does not say that all Sora technology ceased to exist on April 26.
That leaves the Disney+ version uncertain. The available public statements do not establish whether the licensing arrangement was terminated, transferred to another OpenAI product, renegotiated around a different provider, or abandoned. Nor is there verified evidence that the proposed Sora-video feature launched before the consumer service ended. The accurate description is that Disney announced and discussed the plan, but its original implementation route is no longer available in the form first presented.
Disney could theoretically pursue a different model, build a narrower tool, commission conventional short-form work, or decide the concept no longer makes sense. Those are possibilities, not confirmed next steps. Until Disney provides an update, subscribers should not expect to create licensed Disney-character videos on Disney+ or assume a substitute service is in place.

- ✅ True Plug & Play – Keep All OEM Controls No coding, no modifications, no extra adapters. Simply plug it in and go. Your original touchscreen, steering wheel buttons, knobs, and voice commands continue working exactly as designed by your vehicle manufacturer.
- ✅ Wide Vehicle & Phone Compatibility Compatible with most vehicles equipped with wired CarPlay or wired Android Auto. Works with iPhone 6 and newer, Samsung, Pixel, and other Android phones that support CarPlay or Android Auto technologies.
- ⚠️ Important Compatibility Requirements A touchscreen display is required for streaming apps. Streaming services require an internet connection (WiFi or phone hotspot) and login with your own app subscriptions. This model uses a single WiFi module, so WiFi must be reconnected when switching between wireless CarPlay/Android Auto and streaming apps.
What would Disney need to get right?
Putting user-generated clips beside professionally produced films and series would create a quality and identity challenge. Generative video can produce inconsistent characters, continuity errors and weak storytelling. Even if some clips are entertaining, a flood of them could make a premium streaming service feel like an undifferentiated social feed. Curation might protect the brand, but strict selection could also make the experience feel less open-ended than fans expect.
Moderation would be just as important as generation. A Disney-branded service would need clear rules and enforcement for violent or sexual prompts, political or extremist uses of characters, harassment, misleading videos presented as official, copyrighted music or dialogue, and content involving children. It would also need to address age ratings, parental controls, geographic restrictions, reporting and whether clips are screened by people before appearing or served through a live feed.
OpenAI has described safeguards and provenance measures for Sora, including content controls, visible watermarks and C2PA metadata. Its safety materials are relevant context, but they do not show that Disney adopted those measures for a Disney+ product, or that they alone would meet Disney’s needs. Labels would need to help viewers distinguish AI-generated fan work from studio productions and official story continuity.

There are also unresolved questions about rights and work. A limited character license does not settle the treatment of music, dialogue, user uploads, copied prompts, or performer likenesses. Nor does it answer how professional creators might be compensated or protected. AI could lower the friction of experimentation, but it also raises concerns about the value of human creative labor and who benefits from new forms of fan participation.
How to judge any eventual feature
If Disney revives the idea, the practical test is not simply whether the software can produce a clip. Viewers will need to know:
- What is allowed? Which characters, settings, music, voices and kinds of stories can users include?
- What appears on Disney+? Is there a small editorial showcase or a continuous stream of uploads?
- How is it labeled and reviewed? Can viewers tell fan-made AI video from official Disney material, and is content checked before publication?
- Who can use it? What age, country, device and subscription restrictions apply, and what controls do parents have?
- What does it cost? Is generation included, limited by credits, ad-supported or restricted to a tier?
- Who benefits? Does the feature offer subscribers something valuable while addressing rights, creator economics and the cost of moderation?
Until Disney answers those questions and confirms a working product, the proposal is best understood as a test of whether fan-made generative video can fit inside a carefully controlled streaming service—not as a new way to make official Disney movies.
