There is no single electricity bill for running a 24/7 YouTube stream on a Mac mini: the cost depends on the computer’s average power draw while streaming and your electricity rate. Measure the workload at the wall, then calculate average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × price per kWh. Apple’s idle figures are useful context, not a streaming-power estimate.
Calculate the electricity cost
Let P be the Mac mini’s average wall draw in watts and R your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). For continuous operation:
- Daily energy:
P ÷ 1,000 × 24kWh. - 30-day energy:
P ÷ 1,000 × 720kWh. - 365-day energy:
P ÷ 1,000 × 8,760kWh. - Electricity cost: kWh consumed × R.
For example, an average draw of 10 W works out to 0.24 kWh per day, 7.2 kWh in 30 days, and 87.6 kWh in 365 days. At 20 W, the corresponding totals are 0.48, 14.4, and 175.2 kWh. These are arithmetic examples, not measured Mac mini streaming results. Multiply the relevant kWh figure by your own rate; without that rate and a measured workload, a currency estimate would be guesswork.
Use the marginal rate that best reflects the extra electricity you consume. Taxes, tiered rates, and fixed charges can affect a bill, so a simple kWh calculation may not match the full amount charged. If you want the cost of the whole setup, measure the Mac mini and the peripherals you intend to leave on, and be clear whether that includes a display, external drives, capture hardware, or network equipment.

Why Apple’s power figures do not predict streaming use
Apple’s support table lists 4 W idle and 65 W maximum for its listed 2024 Mac mini with M4, and 5 W idle and 140 W maximum for the listed M4 Pro configuration. The same table gives 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for a listed 2023 M2 configuration, and 6.8 W idle and 39 W CPU maximum for a listed M1 (2020) example. These are model- and configuration-specific manufacturer figures, not measurements of a 24/7 stream. Apple defines idle as power with only Finder open under default power-management settings; maximum power is not an expected continuous average. See Apple’s power-consumption table.
For a useful estimate, run the exact streaming setup you plan to use and measure its wall draw with a plug-in power meter or another reliable wall measurement. Measure long enough to capture the normal workload rather than relying on a brief peak or an idle reading. The encoding settings and software affect the workload, but the published figures above do not show how many watts a particular Mac mini will use for a particular stream.

Streaming settings and reliability affect the workload
Power is only one operating cost. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate shape the stream setup and may affect encoder workload; YouTube’s guidance does not provide Mac mini power measurements by setting. Its live-stream recommendations include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingest, recommend RTMPS for RTMP-based streams, and call for a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 1080p at 60 fps; for 720p, it recommends 6 Mbps at 30 fps and 8 Mbps at 60 fps. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and use settings supported by your streaming software. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live feed into output formats for viewers.
Your upload connection must carry the total stream bitrate reliably. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom, warns that connection disruptions can break a stream, and recommends Ethernet for computer streams. Plan separately for live-stream archives
A continuous broadcast does not guarantee a complete YouTube recording. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping an archive matters, make a local recording or plan stream segments, then verify that the resulting recording is complete.
Check channel eligibility before setting up
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. Confirm eligibility before investing time in a continuous-stream setup. Details are on YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.

Account for the full cost of a Mac mini setup
Electricity is a recurring cost; buying a Mac mini is an upfront hardware cost. If comparing an existing computer with a new purchase, keep those costs separate. Compare the encoding workload you need, measured power under that workload, memory and storage needs, the computer’s purchase price in your region, and how you will handle interruptions. Apple’s idle and maximum figures can frame expectations, but they cannot replace a workload test. Also check that your chosen resolution and frame rate fit both YouTube’s encoder guidance and your available upload bandwidth.
