Estimate electricity from the equipment’s measured average power draw and your local electricity rate, then check whether your internet plan charges extra for sustained outbound data. Treat hardware, storage replacement and a UPS as separate setup or lifecycle costs—not part of the electricity bill.
Calculate the electricity cost from measured watts
Use this formula for the equipment that will remain on for the stream:
monthly electricity cost = average watts Ă— hours per day Ă— days Ă· 1,000 Ă— local price per kWh
For continuous operation over a 30-day month, that becomes:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
monthly cost = average watts Ă— 0.72 Ă— local price per kWh
Each additional 1 W of continuous load uses 0.72 kWh in a 30-day month. For a full year, use 8,760 hours rather than 30 days multiplied by 12.

Use a wall measurement, not the adapter rating
A plug-in electricity monitor can measure the NAS and any separate encoder or networking equipment included in the setup. Measure during representative streaming, since encode settings, disk activity and other NAS services can change consumption. If the NAS already runs for storage duties, compare its draw before and during the stream to estimate the incremental cost; do not assume streaming leaves its power use unchanged.
Include equipment dedicated to the stream in the total boundary you are pricing: potentially the NAS, a separate encoder, router, switch and modem. Report the full load and, where useful, the incremental load attributable to streaming separately.

A model-specific illustration, not a universal bill
Synology lists 14.69 W access consumption for its DS224+. If that load continued for 24 hours a day over 30 days, it would use 10.5768 kWh. At the U.S. 2025 average residential electricity price reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), 17.30 cents per kWh, the arithmetic is about $1.83 per month or $22.00 per year. This is an illustration using a manufacturer specification and a national historical benchmark—not a measured FFmpeg stream or a prediction of your local bill. The EIA identifies its 2025 and 2026 figures as preliminary estimates; use your own bill rate, which may reflect local taxes, fixed charges or time-of-use pricing. Synology DS224+ specifications; EIA electricity data.
The DS224+ is one two-bay NAS example: Synology lists 4.41 W in HDD hibernation as well as its 14.69 W access figure. Reading media and running applications may prevent disk hibernation. Its listed 60 W adapter rating is power-supply capacity, not the NAS’s normal operating consumption; do not use it as though the device constantly draws 60 W. Synology DS224+ specifications.

Check the stream’s network and data-plan costs
Bitrate is not an electricity tariff, but it determines how much data the stream sends and can affect processing load when FFmpeg re-encodes the video. At a continuous 5 Mbps, the stream sends approximately 2.25 GB per hour in decimal units before overhead, about 54 GB per day or 1.62 TB per 30-day month. These are arithmetic estimates, not guaranteed billed totals; protocol overhead and an ISP’s units or rounding can change the figure.
Whether that traffic costs extra depends on your ISP plan, data cap and overage terms. No location or provider plan is specified here, so a specific internet charge cannot be quoted. Check the plan’s outbound-data policy before committing to a continuous stream.

Set FFmpeg’s YouTube output to match the source and ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options. For H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises testing the stream and monitoring stream health. These settings are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular NAS can encode a particular source in real time. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| H.264 ingest format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
Use the recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending. Re-encoding can require more processing than passing through compatible encoded media; the source codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, FFmpeg configuration and NAS model all matter. No performance result establishes that every NAS can transcode every chosen stream. Identify the model and encoding path, then test the intended job and measure wall draw.
Budget for hardware and resilience separately
- NAS and drives: If you already own a NAS that is on around the clock, distinguish its existing operating cost from any added streaming load. If buying hardware, a specification for one model does not prove it can encode your particular stream.
- Electricity monitor: A plug-in watt meter is a practical way to obtain the key input for the cost calculation. Check its electrical rating and plug compatibility for your region.
- UPS: A UPS may help with brief power interruptions, but it is an optional purchase with possible conversion losses. Runtime depends on the load and battery; do not assume a particular runtime without a matching configuration.
- Internet plan: Treat any data-cap overage as a separate recurring cost, based on the ISP’s terms rather than the bitrate calculation alone.
For a long-running broadcast, also distinguish the live stream from its archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is not an archive promise for a true continuous 24/7 stream. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Its workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops the upload from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo says each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. The cloud option replaces the local always-on streaming setup with a vendor service; check its terms and your requirements for storage, content rights and archiving. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
