For a 30-day month, compare the VPS price with average wall watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— 720 Ă— local price per kWh. The lowest listed VPS plan is not automatically powerful enough to encode your stream: test the intended video settings and account for shared-CPU limits, network headroom, and recovery needs.
What the comparison includes
A fair comparison separates recurring cash costs from operating risks. The VPS bill is tied to its selected plan and region. A desktop’s electricity cost is tied to the machine’s average draw at the wall and your tariff. Either option may also depend on internet capacity, monitoring, recovery after outages, and how you handle recordings.
- VPS: instance price, included transfer, and any additional services or charges shown in the current account terms.
- Desktop: electricity and any genuinely incremental internet or hardware expense. If your internet plan is already paid for, its incremental cost may be zero, but its upload capacity and reliability still matter.
- Both: enough compute to encode the chosen settings, stable upload capacity, and a plan for reconnecting after a failure.
Prices and availability vary by VPS region. Check the selected region’s current plan and billing details before deciding; the example below is specifically for North America.
North America VPS baseline: the 1 GB Nanode
Akamai’s North America pricing page lists a Nanode with 1 GB RAM, one CPU, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer at $5 per month or $0.0075 per hour. That is a price reference, not proof that the plan can encode every stream workload. Verify the current regional price and terms on Akamai’s pricing page.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Akamai describes shared CPU as burstable. Its compute-plan guidance says CPU cores may reach 100% for short bursts but should remain below 80% sustained average usage, including virtualization overhead; other tenants’ workloads can affect performance. See Akamai’s compute plan guidance. A single shared CPU can be a poor fit if your encoder needs sustained compute. Benchmark the actual video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings rather than assuming a low advertised price means adequate headroom.
Calculate the desktop’s electricity cost
Measure the computer’s average power draw at the wall while it is doing the actual streaming workload. Do not substitute the power supply’s rated wattage: that is not the same as measured consumption.

Monthly electricity cost = (average watts Ă· 1,000) Ă— 720 hours Ă— local price per kWh.
For example, enter your measured watts and the residential electricity rate that applies to you; no universal desktop wattage or electricity price can give a reliable answer. In the United States, the EIA publishes electricity prices by state and end-use sector in its Electric Power Monthly; use your applicable local tariff where available. A plug-in electricity monitor can help measure wall draw, but it is a measurement aid, not a requirement.

Break-even watts = VPS monthly price Ă· (720 hours Ă— local price per kWh) Ă— 1,000.
Use the VPS price for the region and plan you would actually choose and your own electricity rate. Below that draw, the desktop uses less cash for electricity than the VPS bill; above it, electricity alone costs more. This comparison excludes the value of your time, maintenance, outages, and any incremental internet or hardware costs.

That depends on whether the machine is encoding video or simply sending an already prepared stream, and on the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Live encoding of motion at higher resolutions or frame rates can require substantial sustained CPU or hardware-encoding capacity. A low-cost shared plan may therefore be economical but unsuitable. Use representative content and settings to test CPU use and stream stability over a meaningful period.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates: 3 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. It lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, and CBR among supported encoder settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Match settings to the source material and encoder capability; higher resolution is not automatically better if the source is lower quality or the machine cannot sustain encoding.

Upload capacity
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. A home connection may already be paid for, but its sustained upload speed, congestion, and outage risk still count. A VPS may have bundled transfer, but confirm the allowance and any additional service terms. Do not assume a particular overage charge without checking current billing conditions. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise testing and using a reliable connection.
Recovery and maintenance
A desktop depends on local power, internet, operating-system stability, and the computer remaining awake. A VPS avoids dependence on the home computer and home connection, but still needs process supervision, monitoring, reconnect behavior, and media available after a reboot. Neither option should be treated as self-recovering unless you configure and verify recovery behavior.

Long-running stream archives
A continuous broadcast does not guarantee one complete YouTube archive. YouTube warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its archive live streams guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup. Plan session lengths and local recording around that limitation if preserving the full program matters.
Which option makes sense?
| Factor | Linode/Akamai VPS | Spare desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | Selected plan price; North America 1 GB Nanode listed at $5/month or $0.0075/hour on Akamai’s current pricing page. | Measured average watts × operating hours × local electricity price, plus only justified incremental expenses. |
| Encoding headroom | Must be tested on the selected plan; shared CPU is burstable and sustained usage guidance applies. | Depends on the processor or hardware encoder and actual sustained workload; measure while streaming. |
| Network | Check the region, included transfer, and current billing terms. | Check sustained home upload speed, reliability, and YouTube’s recommended headroom. |
| Outage exposure | Not dependent on home power or internet, but still needs monitoring and process recovery. | Exposed to local power, internet, sleep, and reboot issues. |
| Operator effort | Requires server setup, supervision, monitoring, and recovery planning. | Requires a maintained machine, power, internet, and recovery planning. |
A spare desktop is often the more economical choice when it is already available, its measured energy cost is acceptable, and it can sustain the encoding workload reliably. A VPS can be preferable when avoiding home equipment and connection dependency is worth the recurring charge and the selected plan passes a real workload test. For either choice, use the actual local numbers and the settings you intend to run; there is no universal winner based on price alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a pre-recorded YouTube stream that stays live without keeping your own computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, not from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
