Cooper Koch said he did not use a prosthetic penis for the nude prison-shower scene in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. He made the clarification on the October 14, 2024 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. The statement is best reported with attribution: it establishes what Koch said publicly, not every technical detail of how the scene was filmed.

Cooper Koch said he did not use a prosthetic penis for the nude prison-shower scene in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Koch made the clarification during an October 14, 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, after Cohen brought up Mark Wahlberg’s prosthetic in Boogie Nights. “Mine was not a prosthetic,” Koch said.

That is the most accurate way to state the claim: Koch publicly said that he did not wear a prosthetic. His comment does not independently establish every detail of how the scene was filmed, edited, or completed.

What Cooper Koch actually said

During the Bravo interview, host Andy Cohen referenced the famous prosthetic used by Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights while discussing notable full-frontal performances. Koch, who plays Erik Menendez in the Netflix drama, clarified that the body part shown in his scene was not a prosthetic.

The interview aired on October 14, 2024, as Watch What Happens Live 10/14, listed by Bravo as Season 21, Episode 165. Koch later discussed the reaction to the scene in an October 17 interview on The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham on Radio Andy. SiriusXM’s account of that follow-up says Koch again stated that he had not used a prosthetic in the show’s nude scenes and objected to the disproportionate attention paid to the detail.

Which scene is being discussed?

The scene is the full-frontal prison-shower sequence in Episode 3 of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, titled “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” Netflix identifies the series as a 2024, nine-episode, TV-MA scripted drama created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, with Koch playing Erik Menendez.

In the episode, the Menendez brothers enter prison while Erik’s new defense attorney encourages him to discuss his past. The shower encounter is part of the show’s dramatized depiction of Erik’s prison experience and sexual life.

It is important not to treat that depiction as documentary evidence. Monsters is a scripted interpretation of a real criminal case. Its scenes, dialogue, sexual situations, and implied relationships are presented through a dramatic narrative rather than as verified footage of what happened to Erik Menendez.

Does “not a prosthetic” mean the scene was completely real?

No. Koch’s statement answers a specific question: he said he was not wearing a prosthetic. It does not prove that every frame was filmed exactly as it appears on screen or that no other production techniques were used.

The available evidence does not include a production memo, intimacy-coordinator report, visual-effects breakdown, or complete behind-the-scenes account covering every shot. Therefore, it would be too strong to claim that:

  • the scene was “completely real”;
  • there were no visual effects or digital alterations;
  • every frame showed Koch’s body without editing or concealment; or
  • no body double, camera trick, or post-production work was involved in any part of the sequence.

The supported conclusion is narrower: Koch said the penis shown in the nude scene was not a prosthetic. That is different from an independently verified account of the entire filming process.

Why the clarification became news

Full-frontal scenes often prompt speculation about prosthetics, body doubles, camera effects, or digital alterations. The comparison with Boogie Nights made the question especially direct because Wahlberg’s prosthetic in that film is widely associated with the scene.

Koch’s answer attracted attention because the shower sequence was one of the most discussed moments in Monsters. His later comments suggested that he felt coverage had focused more on the anatomy shown in the scene than on the performance or the series itself.

What the Netflix series is—and is not

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dramatizes the case of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of killing their parents. Netflix describes the production as a series that examines the brothers’ story from multiple perspectives. It is not a documentary, court record, or complete historical account.

That distinction matters when discussing the shower scene. The existence of the scene in the series does not establish that the encounter happened in the same way—or happened at all—in the historical record. Viewers should separate three different claims:

Claim What the evidence supports
Koch appeared nude in a prison-shower scene in the series. The scene appears in the Netflix drama’s Episode 3.
Koch used a prosthetic penis for the scene. Koch said he did not.
The scene depicts a verified historical event involving Erik Menendez. That conclusion is not established; the show is a scripted dramatization.
No visual effects, doubles, editing, or other techniques were used. The available reporting does not establish this.

What did the follow-up interview add?

The Radio Andy follow-up did not turn Koch’s statement into an independently audited production record. It did, however, provide corroborating reporting that Koch continued to describe the nude scenes as not involving a prosthetic. It also placed his original comment in context: he was responding to intense public interest in a detail he considered less important than the broader work.

For that reason, responsible coverage should attribute the claim to Koch rather than write that a third party definitively inspected the footage and proved how it was made.

Readers who want the real-case background

Anyone looking beyond the dramatization should keep the distinction between entertainment and nonfiction in mind. Robert Rand’s The Menendez Murders, Updated Edition is a 376-page trade paperback published by BenBella Books on September 10, 2024. It provides background on the real Menendez case, but it should be treated as contextual reading about the case—not as proof of how the Netflix shower scene was produced.

Bottom line

Cooper Koch did not say that the nude scene was unedited, historically accurate, or free of every possible production technique. He said something more specific: the penis shown in his Monsters nude scene was not a prosthetic. That statement was made on Watch What Happens Live on October 14, 2024, and was reiterated in subsequent Radio Andy coverage.

Which episode has the Cooper Koch shower scene?

The scene is in Episode 3, “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” of Netflix’s nine-episode, TV-MA scripted drama.

Does Koch’s statement prove there were no visual effects or editing?

Not necessarily. Koch’s statement addresses the use of a prosthetic, but the available evidence does not independently rule out editing, camera techniques, visual effects, or a body double in any portion of production.

Was the shower encounter a documented event involving the real Erik Menendez?

No. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is a scripted dramatization of the Menendez case, not documentary footage. The shower scene should not be presented as verified historical fact.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cooper Koch said he did not use a prosthetic for the nude prison-shower scene in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The available evidence supports that attributed statement, but does not document every camera, editing, visual-effects, or body-double detail involved in the finished scene.
