Yes—a Contabo VPS can host a process that sends a continuous stream to YouTube Live. Whether a particular plan can reliably relay or encode your stream depends on the workload and must be tested; listed vCPUs, memory, and port speed are specifications, not proof of sustained streaming performance. This guide covers what to check, how to set up and test a VPS stream, and the cloud-hosted alternative.
What a Contabo VPS can—and cannot—tell you
Contabo offers Core, Performance, and Storage VPS families. Core plans use shared vCPU cores and SSD storage; Performance plans use shared vCPU cores on newer AMD EPYC generations with NVMe storage; Storage VPS emphasizes capacity. Network port speeds vary by model. These are provider-published specifications, not independent benchmarks or guarantees that an encoder can use every listed resource continuously. Examples in Contabo’s published Core configurations range from Cloud VPS 4, listed with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD, and a 200 Mbit/s port, to Cloud VPS 18, listed with 18 vCPUs, 96 GB RAM, 600 GB SSD, and a 1,000 Mbit/s port. These figures describe configurations; they do not establish an encoder’s sustained capacity or the number of streams a server can run.
Choose a configuration based first on what the VPS must do. Relaying an already encoded feed is different from encoding or transcoding video on the server, which adds compute demand. The available specifications do not establish a universally sufficient plan for either workload.

Choose a VPS family and estimate the workload
Core or Performance
Compare the exact model’s vCPU, RAM, storage, and network port. Core provides general-purpose shared CPU and SSD storage; Performance pairs shared vCPUs on newer AMD EPYC generations with NVMe storage. Neither family is documented as guaranteed for a particular streaming resolution or continuous encoding load.
Storage VPS
Storage VPS is oriented toward capacity. Do not select it solely because a channel runs continuously: storage capacity does not answer whether the CPU can encode a feed or the network can sustain its outgoing bitrate.

Relay versus encode or transcode
- Relay: The VPS forwards an already encoded stream. It still needs a stable connection and enough capacity for the outgoing traffic and any other server work.
- Encode or transcode: The VPS processes video before sending it. CPU demand depends on the encoding workload; the listed plan specifications alone cannot prove that a model will handle it reliably.
For “How many concurrent 24/7 live streams can I run?”, there is no supported universal answer. The result depends on the stream settings, whether each feed is relayed or encoded, and measured resource use. Test the intended workload rather than extrapolating from a plan name or port speed.
Understand the continuous network and pricing trade-offs
Contabo’s support guidance says there is no default bandwidth limit on VPS and VDS servers, but fair-use rules apply. It reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage and says it will notify affected customers. The same guidance describes product port speeds ranging from 100 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. “No default bandwidth limit” is therefore not a guarantee against throttling. Read Contabo’s bandwidth guidance.

For one stream, the encoder’s outgoing bitrate is the main continuous stream traffic to account for. Leave headroom for protocol overhead and other server traffic, then monitor network use during a representative test. A listed port speed is not itself evidence of a safe sustained bitrate for a specific workload.
Contabo’s pricing page displays plan configurations and prices, but the amount or offer can change with region, billing term, taxes, and checkout conditions. Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Select the VPS configuration. Decide whether it will relay an already encoded feed or encode/transcode it. Compare the exact model’s vCPU, RAM, storage, and port speed, and verify current availability and specifications for your region.
- Install your streaming software and secure VPS access. Choose software suited to the relay or encoding workflow you intend to use. The cited provider and YouTube guidance do not identify a specific software package or establish compatibility, so confirm its requirements independently before deployment.
- Configure the encoder against YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds—not over 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the bitrate range for your actual resolution and frame rate rather than carrying one setting over to every stream. For example, YouTube lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps maximum video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before going live.
- Run a representative test. Use audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and monitor VPS CPU, memory, and network use. A test with a static or silent feed may not represent a program with regular motion and audio.
- Plan for interruption recovery. For an always-on channel, arrange a way to restart the streaming process and alert someone if it stops. These are operational measures to plan and verify; the published Contabo VPS specifications do not establish a Contabo-specific restart or alerting feature.
What the published specifications do not prove
- A plan’s vCPU count and RAM do not establish sustained encoding performance for a chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, or number of concurrent streams.
- A port-speed figure is not a guarantee of a particular continuous stream bitrate or end-to-end stream health.
- “No default bandwidth limit” does not remove Contabo’s fair-use policy or its stated ability to throttle exceptional or disruptive usage.
- No universal Contabo model is established as sufficient for every relay or transcoding setup; test your own configuration and monitor it while live.
Common problems and what to check
YouTube does not receive the feed
Check that the encoder is using the intended YouTube ingest protocol and stream setup, and confirm that the configured key matches the intended broadcast. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s connection status. Prefer RTMPS where supported, as YouTube recommends.
The stream buffers or drops frames
Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s current range for the selected resolution and frame rate. Check VPS CPU use if encoding or transcoding, and check network use and stream-health messages. A plan specification alone cannot identify the bottleneck; reduce workload or adjust settings only after determining whether compute or network capacity is constrained.

The stream stops after running for a while
Inspect the streaming process and server logs, then confirm that the process has a restart and alerting plan. Do not assume a VPS automatically restarts a failed encoder unless you have configured and tested that behavior.
Traffic use triggers concern
Estimate outgoing traffic from the stream bitrate and operating time, then include overhead and other server traffic. Review Contabo’s fair-use guidance and monitor actual network use; its no-default-limit statement is qualified by that policy.
