Its suspense comes not only from who will win, but from Lawrence’s effort to judge what he hears while faith, ambition and institutional power press against one another.
What is Conclave about?
After the pope dies, Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with overseeing the covert process of choosing his successor. As cardinals gather in the Vatican, Lawrence investigates secrets involving the late pope and the candidates. The closed setting gives every conversation and shift in allegiance weight: the election is a procedure, but it is also a contest over what kind of Church will emerge. Focus Features’ official synopsis presents the revelations as capable of shaking the Church’s foundations.

The film is a 2024 thriller directed by Edward Berger and written by Peter Straughan, adapted from Robert Harris’s novel. It runs 2 hours and 1 minute according to Universal Pictures At Home, and is rated PG for thematic material and smoking.
How does the film build suspense?
Conclave makes procedure dramatic. The cardinals’ deliberations, private conversations and maneuvering create a chamber-piece rhythm within the scale of the Vatican: information is incomplete, loyalties are uncertain, and a seemingly small disclosure can alter how a candidate is seen. The investigation gives Lawrence a reason to move between factions, while the election supplies a ticking structure without reducing the story to a race for votes.

Berger told the Associated Press, “I wanted to make it like ‘All the President’s Men.’” That political-thriller influence is felt in the emphasis on observation and shifting alliances rather than action spectacle. The effect depends on watching people read one another—and wondering which of their public declarations reflect conviction, strategy, or both. The Associated Press report describes the film as a thoughtful, adult-oriented drama shaped in large part by Fiennes’s close-up performance.
Why Ralph Fiennes is the film’s center
Lawrence is not a showy investigator or an uncomplicated hero. Fiennes plays him as a careful listener, a man weighing competing claims while confronting his own uncertainty. That restraint gives the political maneuvering a human measure: the question is not only what Lawrence can uncover, but what he can responsibly believe and do with it.

Fiennes told the AP, “When you know the camera is on you and it’s close, that’s when you know your inner world has to speak.” The film gives that inner world room to register in pauses and reactions. Lawrence’s doubts matter because he is not simply watching a struggle for power from outside; he is trying to discern his duty inside it.
How the supporting cast shapes the contest
The ensemble gives the election its competing strategies. Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, Lucian Msamati is Cardinal Adeyemi, Sergio Castellitto is Cardinal Tedesco, and Carlos Diehz is Cardinal Benitez. Isabella Rossellini plays Sister Agnes. Their characters give Lawrence different temperaments and claims to weigh, making the conclave feel like a community with conflicting interests rather than a line-up of interchangeable suspects. Faith, power and the limits of realism
The film’s religious dimension is not just atmosphere around a political contest. Its cardinals must contend with belief and conscience as well as influence, and Lawrence’s inward crisis keeps those questions present even when the immediate tension is about the election. The result is strongest when it lets spiritual doubt and institutional calculation coexist, rather than treating one as a disguise for the other.
Conclave is fiction, not a documentary account of a Vatican election. Harris has described the story as largely “an act of imagination” while discussing historical inspirations in a TIME interview. The film adapts his novel, so its candidates and events should be understood as part of that imagined story, not as a record of actual conclave proceedings.

What the adaptation brings to the screen
Straughan has said, “When you look to see if a book will become a good film, you are looking for the conflict.” In his Focus Features interview, he described the adaptation’s appeal in terms of Harris’s conflict and the figure of Lawrence: a quiet, ordinary man whose common sense and decency make his doubts dramatically meaningful. He also described the story as a chamber piece, a useful way to understand why the film finds tension in constrained spaces and closely watched decisions.
That approach makes the novel’s institutional setting cinematic without asking the viewer to mistake it for reportage. The film’s most effective tension comes from the gap between the Church’s immense authority and the fallible people tasked with exercising it.

Is Conclave worth watching?
For viewers drawn to restrained performances, closed-room maneuvering and stories where conviction is tested by power, Conclave offers a satisfying blend of procedural suspense and spiritual unease. Fiennes supplies its steady emotional focus; the ensemble gives the election its friction. The film’s interest lies less in offering a simple verdict on faith or politics than in making Lawrence’s attempt to discern between them compelling to watch.
Focus Features announced eight Academy Award nominations for the film in 2025: Best Picture, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Best Editing for Nick Emerson, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Original Score for Volker Bertelmann, Best Production Design for Suzie Davies and Cynthia Sleiter, and Best Costume Design for Lisy Christl. The nominations recognize work across the film’s performance and craft categories; they are not a measure of audience response. Focus Features’ announcement lists all eight.
