Crime 101 is a Los Angeles heist thriller whose strongest appeal is its three leads and the lives converging around a planned jewel robbery. Bart Layton’s adaptation has the ingredients of a familiar crime picture, but critics differ on whether its character work and suspense make those ingredients click.
What is Crime 101 about?
Set in sunlit Los Angeles, the film follows a master jewel thief who plans robberies along the 101 freeway. A detective believes he has spotted a pattern in the crimes, while an insurance broker reaches a personal and professional crossroads that brings her into the orbit of the planned score. That three-way setup is the film’s engine; going further would spoil the story’s turns.

Layton wrote and directed the film, adapting Don Winslow’s novella of the same name. The official synopsis presents intersecting characters and a high-value robbery, while the performances and the characters’ separate predicaments give the premise more room than a puzzle about the theft alone.
Who stars in the film?
Chris Hemsworth plays the jewel thief, Mark Ruffalo the detective pursuing the pattern, and Halle Berry the insurance broker whose plans collide with the robbery. The supporting cast includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nick Nolte. Working Title Films’ film page lists the principal ensemble and credits Layton as writer and director.

The leads occupy distinct parts of the crime story rather than functioning as a standard cop-and-robber pairing. That structure makes the film’s character work central to its success: the more compelling the people around the heist are, the more the crossings between their worlds matter.
Does the character drama work better than the heist?
The critical split is largely about what the movie prioritizes. In Variety’s review, Owen Gleiberman describes Crime 101 as an underworld drama and character study rather than a conventional action movie. He highlights the performances, including Hemsworth’s uneasy characterization, and sees the characters’ intersecting lives as a key part of the film’s appeal.

Jake Coyle’s Associated Press review reaches a less enthusiastic conclusion. Coyle calls it a “solid if trope-heavy throwback,” arguing that the character work lacks depth and the film does not deliver enough set-piece spectacle. He awards it two stars out of four.
Those are individual critical judgments, not a measured consensus. They point to the choice facing viewers: if the leads’ performances and the intersections among their characters are what you want from a crime film, Layton’s emphasis may be a strength. If you mainly want elaborate robbery mechanics or sustained action spectacle, the story may feel less satisfying.

How suspenseful is the Los Angeles crime story?
The film draws on familiar heist-thriller territory, and AP explicitly finds it trope-heavy. Variety notes a Michael Mann-adjacent mood, but frames the film as something other than a straightforward action picture. A resemblance in mood or genre is not proof of derivation; the useful question is whether this film’s own character conflicts and robbery plot hold your attention.
The action is another point of difference between the reviews. Coyle finds the set pieces underpowered, while Gleiberman singles out Los Angeles car chases as grippingly unchoreographed. That contrast captures the film’s risk: a less polished, more unsettled approach can feel tense and immediate, but it may not supply the clean spectacle some heist fans expect.

When and where can you watch Crime 101?
Working Title lists the US theatrical release date as 13 February 2026. Amazon’s current guide says the film is streaming on Prime Video worldwide and included for Prime members at no additional cost. Confirm availability and subscription terms in your territory, since storefront access and metadata can change. Amazon’s Prime Video guide is localized to an EU storefront.
Runtime information is inconsistent in the available listings: the AP review reported 140 minutes, while the Prime Video page displayed 2 hours 22 minutes. Neither figure should be treated as definitive for every territory; check the current local listing or classification record if the exact runtime matters.
Should you read Don Winslow’s novella?
The film is explicitly based on Winslow’s novella, making the source a natural companion for viewers interested in the story beyond the screen. It is an optional read-after-watch, not a prerequisite for following the movie. The cited film pages establish the adaptation, but do not verify a particular edition or retailer listing.
