The Catholic Church recognizes 38 saints as Doctors of the Church. A Doctor is a saint whose exceptional holiness and lasting contribution to understanding Scripture, doctrine, prayer, moral theology, or Christian life have been formally recognized by the Church. The newest is John Henry Newman, proclaimed a Doctor by Pope Leo XIV on 1 November 2025.

The title does not mean that every sentence in a Doctor’s writings is infallible. It means that the saint’s overall teaching has provided an enduring, trustworthy service to the Church’s understanding of the faith.

What “Doctor of the Church” means

“Doctor” comes from the Latin word for teacher. In this ecclesial title, it refers to a saint whose writings, preaching, scholarship, or spiritual doctrine have had an exceptional and lasting influence on Christian thought and practice. The designation joins two qualities: holiness of life and an outstanding contribution to the Church’s understanding of the mystery of Christ.

Doctors are not a single school of thought. Their contributions range from biblical translation and exegesis to Trinitarian doctrine, moral theology, mystical prayer, catechesis, apologetics, pastoral governance, and social responsibility. Their authority is complementary: no one Doctor provides a substitute for the others or a complete summary of Catholic theology.

How many Doctors are there now?

There are 38 Doctors of the Church as of John Henry Newman’s declaration in 2025. Older lists may contain 36 or 37 names because they were published before Irenaeus of Lyon was recognized as “Doctor of Unity” in 2022 or before Newman’s 2025 declaration.

Four of the 38 are women: Hildegard of Bingen, Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Ávila (Teresa of Jesus), and Thérèse of Lisieux. Their recognition highlights the Church’s understanding that profound theological and spiritual teaching can arise through contemplative experience, reform, pastoral counsel, artistic expression, and ordinary Christian discipleship as well as through academic theology.

The complete list and each Doctor’s key teaching

1. Ambrose of Milan

Ambrose defended Trinitarian and Christological orthodoxy while serving as a bishop deeply engaged in pastoral care. His hymns and sacramental teaching helped shape Christian worship, and his resistance to imperial interference expressed the Church’s independence from political power.

2. Augustine of Hippo

Augustine explored grace, original sin, conversion, the Trinity, the Church, and the relationship between faith and reason. Confessions presents conversion as a personal encounter with divine mercy, while The City of God interprets Christian hope and history amid the collapse of the Roman world.

3. Jerome

Jerome made biblical scholarship central to Christian learning. His translation of Scripture into the Latin Vulgate shaped Western study, preaching, and theological vocabulary for centuries, while his commentaries modeled close attention to language, history, and exegesis.

4. Gregory the Great

Gregory joined pastoral governance to moral interpretation of Scripture and liturgical prayer. His Pastoral Rule describes the spiritual duties of bishops and pastors, and his name remains associated with the Gregorian chant tradition.

5. Thomas Aquinas

Thomas Aquinas created a systematic synthesis of Aristotelian philosophy and Christian theology. In the Summa Theologiae, he develops accounts of natural law, grace, virtue, the sacraments, and the intelligibility of faith, showing how disciplined reasoning can serve revealed truth.

6. John Chrysostom

John Chrysostom—“golden-mouthed”—is remembered for expository preaching that applied Scripture directly to Christian conduct. He confronted moral corruption, urged practical care for the poor, and treated preaching as a summons to conversion rather than merely an exercise in eloquence.

7. Basil the Great

Basil defended Trinitarian doctrine and gave Eastern monasticism a durable communal form through rules and homilies. He taught that charity toward the poor is a concrete duty of the Church, not an optional private virtue.

9. Athanasius of Alexandria

Athanasius defended the full divinity of Christ against Arianism. For him, the Incarnation is not a minor adjustment to human religious knowledge: because the Son truly becomes human, humanity can be restored and share in divine life.

10. Bonaventure

Bonaventure’s Franciscan theology sees creation as ordered toward God and Christ as the center of illumination. He brought mystical theology and disciplined learning together, describing the soul’s ascent to God as a movement of grace, knowledge, and love.

11. Anselm of Canterbury

Anselm is associated with the principle of “faith seeking understanding.” His writings examine God, the Incarnation, and atonement while arguing that Christian belief is intellectually coherent without reducing faith to a merely philosophical conclusion.

12. Isidore of Seville

Isidore preserved and organized biblical, theological, and classical learning for the early medieval Church. His Etymologies gathered knowledge into an accessible reference work that helped transmit language, history, science, and Christian teaching.

13. Peter Chrysologus

Peter Chrysologus used concise, memorable preaching to teach Christology and Marian doctrine. He connected the liturgical proclamation of the Gospel with conversion, fasting, and practical repentance, making doctrinal truth a direct call to changed life.

14. Leo the Great

Leo the Great articulated the doctrine that Christ is one person in two natures, a formulation central to orthodox Christology. As pope, he also exercised pastoral leadership and defended ecclesial unity during political and doctrinal crises.

16. Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard taught an affective, Christ-centered spirituality grounded in contemplative prayer and love. His Marian devotion, reform of monastic life, and spiritual reading of Scripture direct the believer toward an interior relationship with Christ rather than religious activity alone.

18. Alphonsus Liguori

Alphonsus Liguori developed practical moral theology for confessors, preachers, and ordinary believers. His treatment of conscience and sacramental pastoral care sought a balance between truth and mercy, expressed through compassionate ministry in the Redemptorist mission.

20. Cyril of Alexandria

Cyril defended the unity of the Incarnate Word and the title Theotokos—“God-bearer”—for Mary. His Christology supported the orthodox teaching defended at the Council of Ephesus: the one person born of Mary is truly the divine Son made human.

21. Cyril of Jerusalem

Cyril’s Catechetical Lectures explain the Creed and the sacraments, especially baptism and the Eucharist. His approach joins doctrinal instruction to the concrete preparation of people entering the sacramental life of the Church.

22. John Damascene

John Damascene defended the use of sacred images and supplied a synthesis of Byzantine patristic theology. His defense of icons rests on orthodox Christology: because the Word truly became visible flesh, matter can serve the Church’s proclamation and prayer.

24. Ephrem the Syrian

Ephrem expressed theology through poetry, hymnody, and biblical typology. Sung prayer became a vehicle for teaching orthodox faith, repentance, and the healing of human sin, allowing congregations to learn doctrine through worship.

25. Peter Canisius

Peter Canisius provided clear catechetical instruction and preaching during the Catholic renewal that followed the Reformation. His work demonstrates how accessible explanations of doctrine can strengthen Christian formation without sacrificing precision.

27. Robert Bellarmine

Robert Bellarmine offered systematic apologetics and defended Catholic teaching on the Church, Scripture, and tradition during the Reformation era. His work explains how ecclesial authority and biblical revelation belong together rather than functioning as rival sources.

28. Albert the Great

Albert the Great integrated natural philosophy with theology and encouraged serious study of creation. His intellectual formation made possible the later scholastic synthesis associated especially with Thomas Aquinas.

29. Anthony of Padua

Anthony combined evangelical preaching with Scripture, Eucharistic faith, and calls to repentance. His ministry also defended the poor and vulnerable, showing that preaching must confront injustice and lead to practical conversion.

30. Lawrence of Brindisi

Lawrence of Brindisi used biblical languages, preaching, and apologetics to defend Catholic faith during the Reformation period. Marian devotion and careful scriptural argument worked together in his effort to teach and persuade.

31. Teresa of Ávila (Teresa of Jesus)

Teresa taught contemplative prayer, interior conversion, and discernment while reforming the Carmelite tradition. Her account of the soul’s journey presents prayer as an ordered friendship with God that transforms the whole person. Paul VI’s 1970 apostolic letter praised her “knowledge and doctrine of divine things” and her ability to encourage love of contemplation and the attainment of heavenly things.

32. Catherine of Siena

Catherine joined mystical union with courageous service to the wider Church. Her letters and counsel addressed ecclesial reform, peacemaking, and loyalty to the pope, showing that contemplative love can produce energetic public responsibility.

33. Thérèse of Lisieux

Thérèse taught the “little way” of humble confidence in divine mercy. Childlike trust, missionary prayer, and love expressed through small ordinary acts become, in her spirituality, a path of genuine sanctity rather than a lesser alternative to heroic deeds.

34. John of Ávila

John of Ávila emphasized priestly formation, evangelization, Eucharistic faith, and the sanctification of ordinary Christian life. His concern for the renewal of clergy and seminaries made personal holiness and sound formation essential to pastoral ministry.

36. Gregory of Narek

37. Irenaeus of Lyon

Irenaeus defended apostolic tradition and the unity of Scripture against Gnosticism. His teaching on recapitulation presents Christ as the one who gathers up and renews human history, restoring in himself what sin had disordered. He is recognized as “Doctor of Unity.”

38. John Henry Newman

John Henry Newman examined the development of doctrine, conscience, faith and reason, and the role of the university in Christian formation. His path from Anglicanism to Catholic communion gives his work a distinctive concern for how truth unfolds through history without becoming a different truth. Are the writings of a Doctor infallible?

No. The title does not make every individual proposition in a Doctor’s works infallible, nor does it remove the need to read historical texts carefully. It recognizes the saint’s overall service to the Church’s teaching and spiritual life. A Doctor may write in response to controversies, audiences, languages, and assumptions belonging to a particular period. Readers should therefore distinguish an enduring theological principle from a passing argument, rhetorical expression, or historically limited opinion.

The Church’s understanding is that holiness and knowledge belong together. A 2021 decree on Gregory of Narek, John of Ávila, and Hildegard of Bingen states: “The combination of holiness with knowledge in the experience of the mystery of Jesus Christ is inextricably linked to the mystery of the Church.”

Why the Doctors still matter

The Doctors form a living library rather than a ranked list. Jerome teaches readers how Scripture can be studied; Augustine how grace changes a person; Aquinas how reason can serve faith; Teresa and John of the Cross how prayer becomes transformation; Basil and Chrysostom how doctrine demands care for the poor; and Newman how conscience, history, and doctrinal development can be considered together.

Their diversity is part of their value. Pope Francis observed that the teachings of the women Doctors are “particularly timely due to their enduring depth and relevance” and can offer “light and hope to our fragmented and fractious world.” Read together, the 38 Doctors provide a broad map of Christian understanding: biblical, doctrinal, moral, mystical, pastoral, apologetic, and ecclesial.
