There was no universal winner in March 2026. The right live-TV streaming service depended on your must-have channels, ZIP-code lineup, sports rights, add-ons, DVR needs and the price after promotions ended. YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV were the broad all-purpose starting points; DIRECTV was the more relevant comparison for regional sports and large traditional bundles; Fubo suited sports-first households; Sling TV offered modular savings; and Philo or Frndly TV worked mainly as entertainment supplements.
This is a U.S. comparison of internet-delivered linear television, not on-demand-only services. Prices, packages and local affiliates change, so treat the March 2026 figures as a dated snapshot and verify every lineup at checkout.

Contemporaneous March prices and terms are not established for every provider in the available record. The table therefore distinguishes information that requires a March archive or account-specific quote from features documented on provider pages later in 2026. Do not substitute a later promotional price for a March recurring price.

Check local broadcast channels before subscribing
“Local channels included” is not a nationwide guarantee. A service can carry an ABC affiliate in one market and omit it in another; PBS and CW are particularly variable. Use the provider’s ZIP-code tool, then confirm the affiliate call letters rather than searching only for the network name.
- Open the provider’s official lineup or checkout page.
- Enter the exact home ZIP code and, where requested, the viewing address.
- Confirm ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS and CW affiliates individually.
- Check whether each result is live, on-demand only or available only through an add-on.
- Repeat the check for any regional sports network and your local news station.
YouTube TV instructs customers to enter a home ZIP code. DIRECTV describes locals as included where available. Sling’s local coverage differs by market and plan, making an antenna a practical companion.
Compare sports by event, not by the word “sports”
National networks
Make a checklist for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News, Fox Sports 1 and 2, TNT, TBS, truTV, CBS Sports Network, NFL Network, NBA TV, MLB Network, NHL Network, Golf Channel, Tennis Channel, SEC Network, ACC Network, Big Ten Network and any other network your teams use. A service carrying ESPN does not automatically carry every ESPN-family outlet or every event shown on one.

Regional sports networks
RSN access is concentrated in higher tiers and remains subject to local rights and blackouts. DIRECTV emphasizes RSN availability in Choice and higher packages. Fubo advertises local NBA, NHL and MLB games on qualifying plans, but its own market restrictions still require ZIP-code verification. An RSN subscription is not universal access to every game played by a team.
League-specific test
- Name the team and league.
- Identify whether the game is local, national or out-of-market.
- Find the precise outlet: broadcast network, ESPN-family channel, TNT/TBS, RSN or league service.
- Check local blackout rules.
- Price a standalone league package against the full live-TV bundle.
Why channel counts mislead
Providers may count national networks, local feeds, duplicate regional feeds, FAST channels, music streams, premium channels, add-ons and on-demand-only content differently. Compare two numbers instead: the advertised count and the number of channels that matter to your household.
A 100-channel plan that omits your CBS affiliate or regional network is a worse value than a smaller plan that carries both. Also distinguish a traditional live network from a digital specialty feed; they are not interchangeable simply because both appear in a channel list.

Calculate the real monthly cost
Use this formula:
Real monthly cost = base plan + required channel add-ons + sports or RSN fees + premium services + taxes and other recurring fees.
Record the regular price separately from any first-month or limited-term offer. DIRECTV’s checkout displays promotional pricing separately and notes first-month fees. Fubo distinguishes monthly and quarterly billing, and its average monthly figure on a three-month purchase is not the same as a monthly cancellation option. Taxes and regional restrictions can apply.
Example: news and locals
Start with the least expensive plan that carries your verified ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and preferred news networks. If Sling omits one affiliate, add the cost of an antenna rather than silently treating the missing station as included. If a news network appears only in an Extra package, include that package in the recurring total.

Example: major sports fan
List the team’s channels and game outlets first. Add the required sports tier, RSN fee and any league service, then compare that total with Fubo, DIRECTV and a broader plan from YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV. A lower base price is irrelevant if it cannot show the games.
Example: entertainment household with children
Compare the cost of the required kids, lifestyle and entertainment channels with Philo or Frndly TV, then add an antenna for free broadcast stations. Hulu + Live TV can justify a higher live-TV price when the household would otherwise pay separately for Hulu’s on-demand catalog.

DVR, profiles and simultaneous streams
Ask five separate questions: Is DVR storage unlimited or capped? How long are recordings retained? Can commercials be skipped? How many streams work at once, and are out-of-home streams restricted? Are separate household profiles included?

YouTube TV’s later plan page advertises unlimited DVR, six household accounts and three simultaneous streams. Fubo advertises unlimited Cloud DVR on principal plans but says recordings expire after nine months. “Unlimited” therefore describes capacity, not permanent storage. Confirm whether 4K viewing, extra streams or particular local recordings require a higher tier.
On-demand value is a separate comparison
Hulu + Live TV’s principal distinction is bundling live channels with Hulu’s on-demand library. Evaluate that catalog separately: check whether the desired originals and films are included, whether the on-demand tier carries ads, whether Disney- or ESPN-related services are bundled, and whether separate logins are required. An on-demand library cannot replace live local news or a live game.
Trials, promotions and cancellation
- Trial length varies by provider, plan and eligibility; a card normally renews automatically unless canceled.
- Promotional prices expire on a stated date and generally roll into the regular recurring price.
- Canceling usually prevents future billing, but access may continue or end immediately depending on the provider’s terms.
- Quarterly billing can create a larger immediate charge even when an average monthly price is advertised.
Later examples illustrate the risk of treating offers as permanent: YouTube TV’s page showed a 10-day trial and a promotion ending August 26, 2026, while DIRECTV advertised a five-day trial with monthly renewal after the trial. Those dates are not March 2026 prices.

Device and internet checks
Before ordering, confirm support for your actual Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV or smart-TV model, plus mobile, browser and game-console access. Device lists, minimum broadband speeds, 4K availability and audio formats change; use the provider’s current support documentation. Reliable broadband matters most during high-demand live events. An antenna can reduce streaming bandwidth and subscription costs for broadcast locals.
Alternatives to one large bundle
- Antenna plus a smaller service: receive free broadcast locals over the air and pay only for entertainment or selected sports.
- Standalone league service: compare its price with a full bundle when one league drives the purchase.
- Rotating subscriptions: subscribe during a season or series, then cancel before the next billing cycle.
- Free ad-supported channels: useful for supplemental programming, but not a substitute for paid local rights or premium sports.
- Traditional cable or fiber TV: worth pricing when local affiliates or RSNs make streaming add-ons unusually expensive.
Five-minute buying checklist
- Write down every must-have channel, team and league.
- Enter your ZIP code on each official provider page.
- Verify the exact plan tier and whether each channel is live.
- Check RSN territory, blackout rules and out-of-home stream limits.
- Add every required Extra, premium, sports or regional fee.
- Compare the regular price after the promotion, plus taxes.
- Check DVR retention, simultaneous streams and device support.
- Set a calendar reminder before a trial or promotional period ends.
