What “Common People” is about
The opening episode of Season 7 begins when Amanda, a schoolteacher, suffers a medical emergency. Her husband Mike signs her up for Rivermind, a high-tech system Netflix describes as subscription-based and intended to keep her alive. The story follows a couple confronting the cost and consequences of technology presented as life-saving.
Rivermind is fictional, not a real medical service or product. Charlie Brooker described the premise to Netflix Tudum this way: “I’d been thinking about, what if someone needs a subscription service to stay alive?
