There is no official Marvel ranking of characters who can defeat Thanos in seconds. Scarlet Witch is a credible MCU powers-based contender, while Doctor Strange is pivotal to the Avengers’ eventual victory—but neither point proves an instant solo win. The answer changes sharply depending on whether this is MCU or comics Thanos, whether he has the Infinity Stones, and whether he gets time to react.
What “defeat Thanos in seconds” depends on
“Thanos” is not one fixed matchup. Marvel treats his comics history and his on-screen story as separate continuities, and his equipment can change the scale of the threat. In the MCU, the crucial distinction is whether he has access to all six Infinity Stones. Marvel Japan’s official Endgame character page says he seeks all six to gain the power to erase half of all life with a snap.

- Continuity: MCU feats do not automatically apply to comics versions, or vice versa.
- Equipment: A Stone-equipped Thanos is a different opponent from one without the Stones.
- Opportunity to act: A surprise attack or prepared strategy is not the same as a head-on fight in which Thanos can respond.
- Meaning of “defeat”: A character might overpower him, restrain him, or help bring about a team victory; those are not interchangeable claims.
The official Marvel sources describe powers and story events, not a seconds-based ranking. The judgments below are therefore informed matchup speculation, not established canon.
MCU characters with a plausible case
Scarlet Witch: the strongest powers-based case
Scarlet Witch is a defensible MCU pick if the question is who has abilities that might end a fight quickly. Marvel Japan’s official Infinity War character guide describes Wanda’s telekinesis and psychological influence, and notes that her power grows with emotional intensity. Those abilities give her a plausible way to threaten Thanos before a conventional contest of strength is settled.

That is not proof she would beat him in seconds. The guide does not guarantee an instant victory, and the outcome would depend on the encounter: whether Wanda acts first, how much her powers are available to her, and whether Thanos has the Stones. “Could be dangerous enough to win under favorable conditions” is more supportable than “would instantly defeat him.”
Doctor Strange: a strategic threat, not a demonstrated instant solo win
Doctor Strange’s clearest advantage in the MCU story is strategic. Marvel’s on-screen profile says he used the Time Stone to examine many possible outcomes and found only one path to victory. That makes him central to the eventual plan against Thanos.
Rank #2
It does not show Strange defeating Thanos alone in seconds. His documented contribution is finding a route through the conflict, not simply overpowering Thanos in a brief solo fight. If “defeat” includes outmaneuvering an opponent as part of a larger plan, Strange belongs in the discussion; if it means an immediate one-on-one knockout, the evidence does not establish that.
Thor and Hulk: power alone does not settle the claim
Marvel Japan’s character guide describes Thor’s strength, durability, and lightning abilities, as well as Hulk’s extraordinary strength. These make both obvious MCU contenders in a broad power comparison, but general ability descriptions do not establish that either can instantly beat Thanos—especially when he has all six Stones. Without a specific matchup and demonstrated outcome to support the seconds claim, they are less defensible picks than Scarlet Witch for this particular wording.

Comics Thanos has a long history of cosmic conflicts, and Marvel’s comics profile should not be treated as a profile of his MCU counterpart. Marvel’s Avengers comics material also references Infinity Gem-fueled threats, underscoring why a comics matchup must specify the story or era and whether Thanos has the Gems.
Drax was created with the purpose of defeating Thanos, according to Marvel’s comics profile. That origin premise makes him relevant to a comics list, but it does not establish that he can win quickly or easily. A reliable claim about a comics character defeating Thanos in seconds would need a particular issue or arc and a clearly identified version of Thanos. The available official material here does not establish such a decisive, seconds-long comics matchup.

So, could Scarlet Witch or Doctor Strange beat Thanos?
Scarlet Witch could plausibly defeat MCU Thanos under favorable conditions, but an instant solo victory is not confirmed. Her documented powers make the case based on direct threat. Doctor Strange could help secure victory through planning and timing, but his documented MCU role does not prove he could defeat Thanos alone in seconds. Neither answer should be carried over to comics Thanos without evidence from the specific comic continuity.
For viewers revisiting the MCU version of this conflict, Marvel’s official Endgame page provides the film context for Thanos and the Stones.
