Calling Josh a “psychopath” goes beyond the official character information: the sources identify him as Josh, but do not establish a diagnosis. The film, written and directed by Drew Hancock, stars Sophie Thatcher as Iris and opened in US theaters on January 31, 2025.
What the Companion trailer sets up
Apple TV’s US synopsis describes a weekend getaway at a remote cabin disrupted when one guest is revealed to be “a subservient android built for human companionship” that has “gone haywire.” That premise places a relationship and a malfunctioning android at the center of the film’s tension, without spelling out the full story.

The trailer’s ominous framing can make Josh seem dangerous, but “psychopath” is not an established character description or clinical diagnosis in the official information available. Quaid’s confirmed role is Josh; the official synopsis focuses on the android revelation.

Horror, thriller, or love story?
Apple TV categorizes Companion as both thriller and horror. Warner Bros. Discovery’s promotional announcement takes a different, deliberately provocative angle, inviting audiences to experience “a new kind of love story.” That phrase is the studio’s marketing language, not a quotation from a named cast or crew member.
