A comedian’s dramatic turn can be compelling even when the film around it fails—or fall flat in a well-regarded movie. That distinction matters here: “failed” means a disappointing dramatic vehicle or reception, not proof that an actor cannot do drama. The available evidence supports two specific examples on that side, not a verified list of ten. On the success side, it supports four acclaimed or award-recognized performances. Rather than pad the comparison with unverified names, this guide identifies what the evidence establishes and where it does not.
How to read this comparison
A “serious role” here means a substantially non-comedic performance or a dramatic part in a film whose primary mode is not comedy. The performers qualify because they were known principally for comic work, including stand-up, sketch, or screen comedy. Outcomes are labeled carefully: a film’s reception is not the same as a judgment on an actor’s performance. The available sources do not establish comparable contemporary performance reviews for every candidate, so the entries below distinguish documented reception from interpretation.
Disappointing dramatic turns: what the evidence supports
Bill Murray — The Razor’s Edge (1984)
Murray was widely known as a comic screen performer when he took the lead in this serious adaptation. SlashFilm describes the pivot as a film that failed to resonate with critics or audiences and discusses its effect on his career. That supports calling the project a disappointing outcome; it does not, by itself, establish that Murray’s acting was broadly judged poor. The available account is retrospective, rather than a set of contemporary reviews separating performance from screenplay, direction, and audience response. SlashFilm’s retrospective
Kristen Wiig — Girl Most Likely (2012)
After becoming especially prominent as a comic performer, Wiig led this film in a more dramatic register. TIME reports that the movie was poorly received and commercially unsuccessful, and cites a reviewer who argued that the film squandered Wiig’s comic artistry. That is a criticism of the vehicle and its use of her strengths, not evidence of consensus that Wiig herself failed at drama. The distinction is important: a disappointing film can leave the central performance underused rather than incompetent. TIME’s coverage of Wiig’s dramatic roles

Dramatic performances with documented recognition
Robin Williams — Good Will Hunting (1997)
Williams’s comic identity remained central to his career, but his performance as therapist Sean Maguire in this drama earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. TIME discusses the role alongside his serious work and the comic sensibility he retained. The Oscar is clear recognition of the performance; it should not be mistaken for a measure of every comedian’s prospects in drama. TIME’s profile of Robin Williams
Tom Hanks — Philadelphia (1993)
Hanks, already established in screen comedy, played lawyer Andrew Beckett in this drama about an attorney confronting discrimination after disclosing that he has AIDS. Tatler identifies it as a serious turn and reports that it brought Hanks his first Oscar. The role’s awards recognition makes it a strong success example, while the available source set does not provide a separate contemporary review to quote about the performance. Whoopi Goldberg — The Color Purple (1985)
Goldberg had built her reputation through comedy and performance before playing Celie in this dramatic film. Tatler notes her Academy Award nomination for the role, a substantial marker of recognition for a dramatic debut in a major film. A nomination establishes industry recognition, not universal agreement about a performance, and the available source set does not include a direct review to characterize the critical response more precisely. Bill Murray — Lost in Translation (2003)
Murray’s turn as a fading actor adrift in Tokyo is a useful counterpoint to The Razor’s Edge: a disappointing dramatic project did not make him a permanent failure in serious work. Tatler describes this performance as a dramatic transformation and notes its strong reviews. The two films show why outcomes should be attached to particular roles and projects, not used as permanent labels for performers. Tatler Asia’s list of comedians’ serious roles

Why the same comedian can miss once and succeed later
Drama does not require a performer to erase comic skill. Timing, attentiveness, and sensitivity to shifts in emotion can serve a serious scene; the challenge is whether a script and direction give those qualities room without turning every moment toward a laugh. That is an interpretation, not a universal formula. The examples here suggest a more practical lesson: assess the role, the film, and the evidence separately. Murray’s two films demonstrate how different the reception of one actor’s dramatic turns can be; Wiig’s case warns against assigning a weak film’s shortcomings solely to its lead. The Independent discusses why comedians can excel in straight dramatic roles, including Adam Sandler and Melissa McCarthy, but the available material here does not establish specific entries for a ten-person success or failure list. The headline’s numerical promise cannot be met responsibly with the evidence available for this article. The source set identifies candidates and offers useful context, but it does not substantiate ten distinct disappointing performances and ten successful ones with a direct review or awards record for each. Curated lists can help surface names, but they are not enough to label an individual performance a failure or success. No comparative success rate is established, either. The supportable conclusion is narrower: there are examples of disappointing dramatic projects and acclaimed dramatic performances, and a performer may appear on both sides.
