Calling it Anne Hathaway’s strangest film is our editorial judgment, not a ranking. The older recommendation to watch it on Netflix no longer holds in the United States: a third-party tracker records its U.S. Netflix window as February 9 to August 9, 2026, and Netflix’s own title page says the film is not available in the visitor’s country. The rest of this guide covers what the film is, what to expect from its tone, and how to find it where you live.
What Colossal is about
Hathaway plays Gloria, an unemployed party-going New Yorker who loses her job and her boyfriend and then returns to her hometown. Netflix’s synopsis describes the setup this way: “An unemployed New York party girl who’s returned to her hometown comes to believe she has a connection to a mega-monster running amok in Seoul.” Brightlight Pictures, the production company, describes the discovery as Gloria learning how “strangely connected” she is to an enormous creature.

The film keeps its central mechanism partly hidden, and this review does the same. What you need to know is that the connection between Gloria and the creature is not a gag that gets resolved quickly. It becomes the engine for everything that follows.
What to expect from the tone
Most monster films separate their human story from their creature story. Colossal does not. Nacho Vigalondo, who wrote and directed the film, lets its small-scale personal material and its giant-scale spectacle feed into each other. The early stretch plays as a prickly, sometimes awkward character study. The mood then shifts into darker fantasy, and the monster stops being background scenery and becomes part of the emotional argument.

That is the reason the film is hard to file under a single label. If you come for a light creature comedy, the first act may feel slower and more uncomfortable than you expect. If you come for a grim disaster film, the early humor will catch you off guard. Tom’s Guide, in a February 10, 2026 piece recommending the film, described the same genre shifts and was the source of the “strangest movies” framing that this article inherits.

How to check before you press play
Because listings move, run these checks in the country where you will watch:
- Open the Netflix title page for Colossal while signed in or while using the country you live in. If it reads that the title is not available there, the film is not in that Netflix catalogue.
- Open JustWatch, use its country selector to choose your territory, and search for Colossal. Confirm the service name and whether it is subscription, rental, purchase, or physical media.
- If a streaming service is listed, open that service’s app and search for the title. Listings can lag behind catalogue changes.
- If you buy or rent digitally, or buy physical media, check the price and edition at the point of sale. Physical editions differ by region.
How critics and audiences received it
On Rotten Tomatoes, accessed October 8, 2026, the film has an 82% Tomatometer score from 263 reviews and a 58% Popcornmeter score from more than 10,000 ratings. The gap suggests that critics responded more warmly than general audiences, which fits a film that is unusual in its tone and may divide viewers who expected something more conventional. Aggregator scores change over time and do not predict how any one viewer will react.
