Director Aya Komaki described the scene as Neva’s power entering Goku and “blossom[ing]” inside him—not simply Goku psyching himself up. That explanation comes from a translated interview excerpt reported by ComicBook.com, rather than a published English transcript.
When does Goku transform?
The transformation happens during Goku’s fight with Third Eye Gomah in episode 18. The official Dragon Ball episode recap published February 8, 2025, sets up the sequence: Gomah gains the Evil Third Eye, also called the Tertian Oculus, in episode 16 and becomes a giant opponent. At the end of episode 17, Goku turns Super Saiyan 3; episode 18 continues the battle.
That sequence establishes the on-screen progression, but the explanation for how Goku reaches Super Saiyan 4 comes from Komaki’s later comments.
What does Neva do to Goku?
In an interview excerpt from a Japanese Daima lore booklet, translated for global readers and reported by ComicBook.com on September 25, 2025, series director Aya Komaki says Neva draws out Goku’s ability. She said the team wanted the change to look less like Goku “psyching himself up” and more like “Neva’s ability enters inside Goku (Mini) and blossoms inside Goku (Mini).”

So Neva is the story’s catalyst: his intervention brings out Goku’s ability to transform. The reported comments do not spell out a precise ki mechanism, quantify what Neva contributes, or say that he permanently changes Goku. Those details should not be assumed.
How does Daima’s Super Saiyan 4 compare with GT?
Super Saiyan 4 was previously associated with Dragon Ball GT, which ComicBook.com identifies as the form’s 1996 debut. Daima gives the form a new appearance and a story-specific trigger involving Neva. The two series’ narrative explanations should not be conflated.

Toei describes Daima as an original anime based on a new Dragon Ball story and characters from Akira Toriyama, and credits Toriyama with the original concept, story, and character designs in its September 12, 2024 press release. That documented involvement does not, by itself, amount to an official ruling that every part of GT continuity applies to Daima. “Canon” is often used in fan discussion, but the cited official materials do not provide a formal continuity ruling.

Komaki also discussed the scene’s color choices in the same translated interview excerpt. She said the team associated Super Saiyan 4 with red and added red elements to Goku’s Kamehameha, which is usually blue. The animators and filming team worked through the effect cut by cut to give the sequence an orthodox feel with an identity specific to Daima.
