Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell play the employees caught in the outbreak, with Liam Neeson as the bioterror operative who joins the fight. Its combination of monster-movie suspense, splattery violence and comedy makes it a deliberately gooey, goofy throwback—not a documentary about fungus or storage.
What is Cold Storage about?
Teacake (Joe Keery) and Naomi (Georgina Campbell) work for a self-storage company built on the site of a former U.S. military base. Deep below the facility, a parasitic fungus escapes hibernation from a sealed sublevel. As the temperature rises, it multiplies and threatens everyone in the building. The two night-shift workers get help from a grizzled bioterror operative played by Liam Neeson.
The setup comes from Sony Pictures’ official synopsis. Jonny Campbell directed the film, and David Koepp wrote it. The listed cast also includes Sosie Bacon, Vanessa Redgrave and Lesley Manville, according to Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Is Cold Storage funny or scary?
It aims for both: the comic energy sits alongside real creature-feature tension rather than replacing it. STUDIOCANAL promotes the film with B-movie thrills, gruesome kills, gloopy gore and a mutant reindeer. That is the distributor’s pitch, but it helps explain the film’s knowingly pulpy, splatter-comedy angle.

Two dated critical reactions capture the mix. On 27 February 2026, Christy Lemire of FilmWeek/LAist called it “very funny and very gnarly.” On 24 February 2026, Empire’s Kim Newman described it as “A clever, funny, suspenseful, interestingly cynical science-fiction horror movie with a great collection of monsters — courtesy of make-up geniuses Dave and Lou Elsey — and a cast whose enthusiasm is, appropriately, infectious.” These are individual critics’ views, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the balance equally effective.
How gory is Cold Storage?
Expect substantial bloody violence and graphic gore. The British Board of Film Classification lists the film’s content as “strong bloody violence, gore, language.” Its advisory also notes a tense horror atmosphere that is often interrupted by comedy, suicide-related scenes and flashing images that may affect photosensitive viewers. See the BBFC content advice for further detail.

If you enjoy creature features that mix workplace chaos, absurdity and graphic practical-looking monster mayhem, Cold Storage has a clear appeal: a contained outbreak premise, a game ensemble and a tone that deliberately swings between suspense and comedy. It is a less natural fit if you want restrained horror or are sensitive to bloody injuries. Its “throwback” character is a critical description of its B-movie sensibility, not a claim that it reproduces one specific earlier film.
