Cold Chisel announced The Big Five-0 on 29 May 2024: an Australian tour celebrating 50 years together, with a catalogue-spanning set and specially built big-top shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The tour ran from 5 October to 17 November 2024, so its dates are now historical. Here’s what the band announced and what followed.
What was The Big Five-0?
The Big Five-0 was Cold Chisel’s 50th-anniversary Australian tour, announced on 29 May 2024. Rather than promote a new album, the band described it as a celebration of its song catalogue, with a set reaching across its career. Guitarist and singer Ian Moss said the group planned to play at least 15 songs audiences expected to hear, alongside musical surprises. Cold Chisel’s announcement also framed the tour as a return to two places important to the band’s beginnings: Armidale and Adelaide.
When did the tour start, and which cities did it visit?
The announced dates began in Armidale on 5 October 2024 and were scheduled to finish in Adelaide on 17 November. The itinerary covered regional and capital-city stops, with additional shows announced after demand for tickets to initial dates. The band’s later retrospective says the Australian tour leg concluded at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on 16 November 2024, a day before the originally announced final date. Cold Chisel reported that 225,000 people attended the Australian leg; that is the band’s own published figure, not an independently audited attendance statistic. Cold Chisel’s official site carries the retrospective.
The announcement named these destinations and venues. Because dates and venues changed as shows were added, consult the band’s archived schedule for a date-specific account.

The mix included arenas, outdoor events, winery shows and a motorsport post-race concert. The original announcement described six additional shows added after ticket demand for the initial dates.
Why did the tour begin in Armidale and end in Adelaide?
Cold Chisel said it had based itself in Armidale in 1974–75 while Don Walker completed university studies. Adelaide is where the band formed. Walker, the group’s piano player and chief songwriter, described the bookends as places where the band first “welded” itself together.

Bassist Phil Small also explained the inclusion of Ballarat as a playful nod to its gold-mining history: “Gold is obviously associated with 50th anniversaries.” He said the group was looking forward to playing Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong and Hobart, cities he described as important to the band over the preceding 50 years. These comments were part of the band’s 2024 announcement.
What was planned for the big-top shows?
For Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Cold Chisel announced specially constructed circus big-top tents with a stated capacity of 10,000. The plan included floor and bleacher seating, as well as a general-admission standing area. The band linked the staging to its 1982 “An Evening with the Circus Animals” shows. The 10,000 figure was the announced capacity of the tents, not a reported attendance for any concert.

Can you still buy tickets for The Big Five-0?
No: the 2024 tour has ended, so its tickets are not current. For any future Cold Chisel event, use the show-specific official links on the band’s tour page. The band cautions against reseller sites that may charge more. That page can change as new events are announced; it does not make the 2024 dates available again.
Why did the announcement matter?
The Big Five-0 joined a retrospective setlist concept to a tour shaped around the band’s history: Armidale and Adelaide as symbolic endpoints, a circus-inspired setting for three major-city shows, and a rotating guest bill across a varied national itinerary. The later live release preserves that concert celebration, while the 2024 compilation offers a separate way to revisit the catalogue.
