Code of Silence has a crime-drama hook with real potential: a Deaf woman’s lip-reading helps police investigate a gang, while her growing attraction to one of the suspects complicates her role. That premise gives the six-part series a distinctive way to handle clues and suspense. It is a strong reason to watch, though the available facts about the series do not establish that its execution transforms the crime genre—or justify calling it a must-watch for everyone.
What is Code of Silence about?
Created and written by Catherine Moulton, Code of Silence is a six-part crime drama produced by Mammoth Screen for ITV. Rose Ayling-Ellis plays Alison Brooks, a Deaf canteen worker whose lip-reading skills draw her into a police investigation of a criminal gang. Alison is also attracted to Liam Barlow, played by Kieron Moore, who is a suspect in that investigation.
The official production synopsis places the story in Canterbury. Alison also works in a local bar and cares for her Deaf mother. The result is a setup with more than one kind of pressure: Alison’s skill can make her useful to investigators, but her personal connection to a suspect puts her in a difficult position. Charlotte Ritchie plays DS Ashleigh Francis, and Andrew Buchan plays DI James Marsh.
What makes the premise distinctive?
Clues depend on context, not just dialogue
In many crime dramas, the audience learns what a character said through clearly audible dialogue. Here, lip-reading offers a different route to information: viewers are invited to think about what Alison can infer from faces, fragments and context, and what may remain uncertain. That can make surveillance scenes feel like an active process of interpretation rather than a simple exchange of exposition.

Moulton described the creative starting point as the idea that “lip readers are detectives, unlocking a silent code.” The concept is especially apt for a thriller, where an incomplete clue can create suspense—but the uncertainty matters. In the ITV press pack, Moulton says it is estimated that only 30–40% of speech sounds can be lip-read even in ideal situations, with the rest understood through context. The press pack attributes that estimate to her and does not identify an underlying study, so it should be treated as the creator’s explanation of the premise, not as an independently verified statistic.
The investigation and Alison’s personal life intersect
Alison’s attraction to Liam puts the emotional conflict inside the central investigation instead of beside it. That is a promising source of tension: the same person may be both a suspect and someone Alison cares about. Whether the balance between procedural mystery and personal drama fully works is a question of execution; the setup alone cannot settle it.

Deaf experience is central to the story
The series does not use lip-reading as a decorative trick. It is the reason Alison enters the investigation, and the premise depends on the limits as well as the possibilities of interpreting speech visually. That opens space for suspense without treating spoken dialogue as the only way information can reach a character or the audience.
ITV says Moulton drew on her own experiences with lip-reading and hearing loss, and official materials describe the drama as bringing Deaf experience into the crime genre. Those statements explain the creators’ intent; they do not, by themselves, prove that every part of the portrayal will feel authentic to every Deaf viewer. The most defensible assessment is that Deaf experience is built into the show’s central mechanism, rather than added as a side story.

Does Code of Silence change the crime genre?
Its premise gives the series a credible way to distinguish itself: clues are filtered through lip-reading, the possibility of misinterpretation can be part of suspense, and Alison’s personal connection to a suspect complicates her involvement. Those are meaningful genre choices, not proof that the series changes crime drama for the better. That larger claim depends on how consistently the episodes develop the investigation, handle the personal conflict and make the clues legible to viewers.
Based on the established premise, Code of Silence is most compelling as a crime thriller that asks who gets to interpret a conversation and how much certainty a fragment can provide. It is worth considering for viewers drawn to mysteries with a distinctive point of view and a Deaf protagonist at the centre. A broader verdict on the quality of its performances, direction or episode-to-episode plotting cannot be responsibly inferred from the official descriptions alone.

Is season two of Code of Silence coming back?
Yes. In an announcement dated August 20, 2026, BritBox said filming had begun on a second six-part season. Ayling-Ellis returns as Alison, now described as having completed forensic lip-reading training and assisting an investigation involving a money-laundering syndicate. The announcement gave no release date, so season two should be understood as in production as of that date, not as available to stream.
