It also listed sepsis, graft-versus-host disease, an immunosuppressed state, chronic kidney disease, and pneumonia as contributing conditions. Escobedo died at 59 after a recent liver transplant, but the certificate does not identify the transplant alone as the official cause.
What was Cleto Escobedo III’s cause of death?
Cleto Escobedo III’s death certificate listed cardiogenic shock as the immediate cause of death. It listed vasodilatory shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver as underlying causes. The certificate also listed sepsis, graft-versus-host disease, an immunosuppressed state, chronic kidney disease, and pneumonia as contributing conditions. A copy of the Los Angeles County death certificate published by TMZ provides the most detailed public account reviewed as of August 10, 2026.
Escobedo died on November 11, 2025, at age 59. The certificate records a liver transplant on September 10 and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on November 5. Separate reporting said he died following complications related to the transplant, but the certificate does not identify the transplant alone as the official cause. The most precise summary is that Escobedo died during a severe medical crisis after a liver transplant, with cardiogenic shock recorded as the immediate cause.
What the death certificate says
| Category | Conditions listed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate cause | Cardiogenic shock | The terminal failure recorded at the end of the causal chain: the heart could not pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. |
| Underlying causes | Vasodilatory shock; DIC; alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver | Conditions recorded as leading to or helping produce the immediate cause. |
| Contributing conditions | Sepsis; graft-versus-host disease; immunosuppressed state; chronic kidney disease; pneumonia | Serious medical problems that contributed to the fatal illness but were listed separately from the primary causal sequence. |
| Recent procedures | Liver transplant on September 10, 2025; ECMO on November 5, 2025 | Documented procedures showing the severity and timing of his final illness, without proving that either procedure itself caused his death. |
What cardiogenic shock means
Cardiogenic shock occurs when the heart suddenly cannot pump enough blood to supply the body’s organs. It is a life-threatening form of circulatory failure, not simply another name for chronic congestive heart failure. Mayo Clinic explains cardiogenic shock as a condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood and oxygen to the body.

The certificate does not say that Escobedo had a heart attack, and there is no reviewed public evidence establishing one. For that reason, reports should not turn the exact diagnosis of cardiogenic shock into the unsupported claim that he died of a heart attack.
How the other listed conditions fit together
Vasodilatory shock
Vasodilatory shock, also called distributive shock, involves widespread relaxation or dilation of blood vessels. Blood pressure can fall and tissues may not receive adequate blood flow even when the heart is still attempting to circulate blood. It can occur with sepsis and other severe systemic illnesses. The certificate does not explain the precise mechanism that produced Escobedo’s vasodilatory shock. The National Library of Medicine describes distributive shock and its causes.
Disseminated intravascular coagulation
DIC is a dangerous clotting disorder in which abnormal clots form throughout small blood vessels. The process consumes platelets and clotting factors, meaning that serious bleeding can also occur. DIC is generally a syndrome triggered by another major illness rather than a standalone disease. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute provides an overview of DIC.
Alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver
Cirrhosis is advanced scarring of the liver. The death certificate specifically uses the wording “alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver.” That wording should be reported accurately, but it does not establish when the liver disease began, whether alcohol use was active near the time of Escobedo’s death, or any broader claim about his personal history. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism discusses alcohol-associated liver disease and cirrhosis.

Sepsis, pneumonia, immunosuppression, and kidney disease
Sepsis was listed as a contributing condition, not as the immediate cause. The certificate does not identify the infection that may have produced sepsis. Likewise, pneumonia is listed without specifying whether it was bacterial, viral, aspiration-related, or associated with hospitalization.
“Immunosuppressed” describes a state in which immune defenses are reduced; it should not be treated as a separate, fully explained disease diagnosis. Chronic kidney disease was also listed as a contributing condition, but the public record does not provide enough clinical detail to determine its precise role in the final sequence.
Graft-versus-host disease
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) occurs when donor immune cells attack the recipient’s tissues. It is most commonly associated with blood or bone-marrow transplants, but it is also a rare and potentially severe complication after liver transplantation. The listing is medically compatible with a post-transplant illness, but the available records do not explain exactly how GVHD developed in Escobedo’s case. The National Library of Medicine explains GVHD, while a review in the medical literature discusses GVHD after liver transplantation.
Was Cleto Escobedo’s death caused by a liver transplant?
The public evidence supports a careful answer rather than a categorical one.

- The death certificate records a liver transplant on September 10, 2025.
- It records ECMO, a form of advanced life support, on November 5, 2025.
- Reporting after Escobedo’s death connected his final illness with complications following the transplant. Rolling Stone-linked reporting carried by Yahoo Entertainment described the death in that context.
- The certificate itself lists cardiogenic shock as the immediate cause, with vasodilatory shock, DIC, and alcoholic cirrhosis as underlying causes.
Therefore, it is supportable to say that Escobedo died after a liver transplant and that reports linked his death to transplant-related complications. It is too strong to say that the transplant alone was officially identified as the cause of death.
ECMO can temporarily support some heart and lung functions in a critical illness. Its appearance on the certificate shows how serious Escobedo’s condition had become, but the public record does not state why doctors used ECMO or which organ system prompted the treatment.
What was known about his final months?
Escobedo had been absent from Jimmy Kimmel Live! for months while receiving medical care. In coverage of his death, Jimmy Kimmel referred to an “awful few months” and thanked staff at UCLA Medical Center and Sherman Oaks Hospital for caring for his longtime friend. The Washington Post reported on the illness context and Kimmel’s comments.
Kimmel announced Escobedo’s death on November 11, initially without disclosing a cause. The death-certificate details were published on November 14, and subsequent reports added the transplant-complication context.

Who was Cleto Escobedo III?
Escobedo was the saxophonist and longtime bandleader of Cleto and the Cletones, the house band on Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the program’s launch in 2003 until his death. He and Kimmel met as children in Las Vegas and remained close for decades. CBS News covered Kimmel’s announcement and their long friendship.
Before joining the late-night show, Escobedo worked as a professional musician, including touring with Paula Abdul and performing with other prominent artists. In a 2022 oral-history interview, he discussed his career, his relationship with Kimmel, his work on the show, and helping bring his father back into professional music. His career and the history of the band are also documented by the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Libraries oral-history project and the American Federation of Musicians.
What did Jimmy Kimmel say after his death?
Kimmel described Escobedo as his longtime bandleader and childhood friend, saying they had been inseparable since Kimmel was nine. He later delivered an emotional on-air tribute and paused the program for the remainder of that week. What is not publicly established?
The death certificate provides a causal hierarchy, but not a complete hospital narrative. The reviewed public evidence does not include detailed laboratory results, imaging, pathology, medication history, transplant-donor information, or a full account of the events at UCLA Medical Center. It also does not establish which infection, if any, triggered sepsis; what type of pneumonia Escobedo had; or the exact mechanism connecting the transplant, GVHD, shock, DIC, and cardiogenic shock.
For that reason, the most accurate reporting should preserve the distinction between what the certificate documents, what outside reporting says about transplant complications, and what remains unknown. The available evidence does not justify saying that Escobedo died simply of heart failure, alcoholism, sepsis, GVHD, or the transplant itself.
