Ayanokoji’s classmates may be his most complicated obstacle—not because the story establishes them as stronger than every rival, but because his plans depend on people whose trust and cooperation he does not consistently earn. In Classroom of the Elite Year 2, group formation and a cross-class contest make those relationships part of the competition itself. The official setup supports that reading, while leaving open whether classmates are truly his biggest threat.
Why Ayanokoji’s class is back in Class D
The Year 2 story begins with a setback. KADOKAWA’s description says Ayanokoji’s class had climbed to Class C, narrowly lost the final special exam to Class A, and returned to Class D. That puts the class back at the bottom of the school’s hierarchy as the new term begins. KADOKAWA Animation Portal

The season also introduces a new batch of first-year students. So the challenge is not simply whether Ayanokoji can manage the classmates he already knows: his year group must contend with rivals across the other classes and an unfamiliar set of younger students.
Why classmates can affect the outcome
The official story synopsis gives peer relationships a practical role: students have four weeks to form groups, after which a contest involving all classes begins to recruit members. In that setup, who will work with whom is not merely a social subplot. It can shape the group a student joins and the class’s ability to coordinate. Official anime story page
#1 Best Overall
That structure creates several possible points of friction. A classmate may have different priorities, hesitate to follow a plan, or prefer another partner. These are reasonable implications of a group-based competition, not confirmed plot outcomes. The official synopsis establishes the group-building period and cross-class contest; it does not specify that any one student will sabotage Ayanokoji.
What makes Ayanokoji’s relationships complicated
Ayanokoji’s official character profile describes a change in how some classmates see him: special exams have made some students regard him differently, though he previously attracted little attention. The profile also says that he remains intent on winning and feels no guilt about using people. Those traits create an obvious tension: classmates may recognize his abilities while questioning whether they can trust his motives. Official anime character page
Rank #2
The same profile notes that a study group with Hasebe and others brought them closer. That detail matters because his relationships are not presented as uniformly distant. Some connections can deepen, even as his instrumental approach risks making cooperation fragile. Classmates are therefore a potential obstacle and a necessary resource at once.
Who is in Ayanokoji’s Year 2 Class D?
The official season site lists Kiyotaka Ayanokoji alongside classmates including Suzune Horikita, Kei Karuizawa, Kikyo Kushida, Yosuke Hirata, and Rokusuke Koenji. The roster identifies the people around him; it does not establish that each is an opponent or that all will play an equal role in the group contest. Official anime character page
That distinction keeps the “biggest obstacle” claim in proportion. A class roster is not a list of antagonists. The risk comes from the need to coordinate with peers who may have their own interests, not from proof that every classmate is working against Ayanokoji.
Are classmates a bigger obstacle than rival classes?
There is no official ranking of Ayanokoji’s obstacles. The case for classmates is about dependence: he may be exceptionally capable as an individual, but the group-formation period makes cooperation consequential. A rival class can oppose him from outside; a classmate’s lack of trust or conflicting choice could complicate the plan from within.
External pressure remains substantial. The official synopsis makes recruitment a contest across all classes, and KADOKAWA’s season description places new first-year students in the Year 2 setup. Those forces can challenge Ayanokoji without relying on internal conflict. The most defensible conclusion is that classmates may be his most difficult obstacle to manage, not that the story has confirmed them as more formidable than every rival.
