Class Act is a short story by Namhla Tshisana included in South African Grade 12 English First Additional Language prescribed-story materials. The available official exam extracts establish a first-person account of a difficult high-school experience, including disruptive classmates and name-calling. They support analysis of bullying, belonging and identity, but detailed claims about the full plot or its ending should be checked against the complete authorized story.
Who wrote Class Act?
Namhla Tshisana wrote Class Act. A prescribed-literature list identifies it as part of Changes (An anthology of Short Stories), and the Western Cape Education Department’s Grade 12 English First Additional Language workbook includes it in its prescribed short-story set. The sources establish the story’s author and school-reading context, but do not establish an original publication date, first publication venue, ISBN or current edition.

What is Class Act about?
The official examination materials provide selected passages rather than the complete story, so they do not establish enough to give a reliable full plot summary or describe its resolution. In the May–June 2024 English FAL Paper 2, the first-person narrator recalls a bad week at school, disruptive classmates and a teacher who cannot settle the class. A North West September 2024 paper reproduces a further passage in which the narrator says she dislikes high school, reports that classmates call her “Sister Mary Clarence,” and recounts a visit from Aunt Connie.

What themes can be analyzed?
Bullying and peer treatment
Bullying is not merely an inferred topic: a Department of Basic Education examination question explicitly asks candidates to discuss it as a theme in Class Act. The reproduced passages also show disruptive behavior and a nickname used by classmates. In a close reading, examine what the narrator reports, how she responds, and how the classroom environment shapes the impact of peer conduct. Support claims about particular incidents with the full text.
Belonging and adjustment
The narrator’s expressed dislike of high school offers a starting point for considering adjustment and belonging. Rather than assuming that one line represents her entire experience, trace how her expectations, interactions and reactions develop across the story. The excerpts establish difficulty at school, but do not by themselves settle what the story ultimately says about belonging.

Names, labels and identity
The “Sister Mary Clarence” label provides a concrete point for exploring how classmates characterize the narrator and how she experiences those descriptions. Compare the narrator’s own account of herself with the label imposed by peers. Do not infer details about her appearance or identity from the nickname alone; anchor such interpretations in the full story’s wording and context.
How to build a well-supported interpretation
- Start with the exact passage. Identify what the narrator says or what another character does before drawing a conclusion about motive or meaning.
- Separate evidence from interpretation. For example, the exam extract establishes that classmates use a nickname; the claim that the nickname affects the narrator’s sense of belonging needs support from her response in the complete text.
- Track contrasts. Compare the narrator’s self-description with classmates’ labels, peer conduct with the teacher’s response, and her expectations of high school with her reported experience. These are useful reading lenses, not a substitute for textual evidence.
- Check the whole story. The examination papers reproduce selected extracts, not the complete authorized text. Use the assigned anthology to verify context and avoid claiming an event, character motive or ending that the passages do not show.
Where does the story appear?
Official South African educational materials place Class Act among the prescribed Grade 12 English FAL short stories and identify Changes (An anthology of Short Stories) as the relevant anthology. The available sources do not verify a current retail edition or a particular publisher, ISBN, price or stock status, so confirm the assigned edition with the school or teacher.
