The City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club celebrated its centenary in 2025 with a two-day exhibition of photographs, trophies and other keepsakes from its archive. The dates behind the milestone need a little context: the State Heritage Office records lifesaving activity beginning at City Beach in December 1924, while the club says it officially formed in early 1925 and describes the 2025 season as its 100-year centenary.
Why accounts give both 1924 and 1925
The difference reflects two milestones rather than a single settled founding date. The State Heritage Office says members of the City of Perth Amateur Swimming Club began informal lifesaving patrols at City Beach in December 1924 and describes them as forming Western Australia’s third surf lifesaving club. The club’s own history dates its official formation to early 1925. Its 2025 annual report calls that season the club’s 100-year centenary.
The next milestones came in 1926: the State Heritage Office dates the opening of the timber clubrooms to February, and the official opening of the beach to December. The centenary exhibition thus looked back across a history that began with activity in 1924, was formally established in 1925 and gained clubrooms in 1926.
What visitors saw in the centenary exhibition
Held over two days in the clubrooms on the City Beach foreshore, the exhibition brought archival material into public view. PerthNow reported that club historian and life member Ian Scott described a collection of more than 2,000 photographs, along with old trophies, shark teeth and other objects kept in the club archives. The figure is Scott’s reported estimate, not an independently audited inventory.

Scott summed up the reason for sharing the collection: “A lot has happened since we started back in 1924, so we’ve got a lot of things to put out on show,” he told PerthNow. The exhibition offered a walk down memory lane through the club’s highlights, hardships and champions.
Women’s history is part of the club’s story
The archive’s significance reaches beyond patrols and competition. In PerthNow’s account, members recalled how women helped sustain the club during the Second World War, and how their participation later changed.

Penny Cohen, who joined in 1985, recalled that her great-aunt Betty Mabry had helped look after the club and patrol while men were away at war. Cohen said Mabry was later told her services were no longer needed. The report says women’s membership and voting rights had been removed after the war and were restored five years before Cohen joined.
Sue Scott joined after women returned to the club. PerthNow reported that she became the first woman elected president of a surf lifesaving club in Western Australia in 1991. These recollections place women’s volunteer work, exclusion and later leadership alongside the club’s more familiar stories of lifesaving and sporting achievement.
