Citadel: Honey Bunny is a six-episode Indian spy-action melodrama that works best when its missions are inseparable from its relationships. Samantha Ruth Prabhu gives Honey the physical conviction the action needs, and the 1990s Hindi-film setting lends the series a distinctive texture. But the central romance is more compelling as an idea than as a consistently persuasive on-screen bond, while predictable turns and uneven pacing blunt the tension. The result is an entertaining prequel with a worthwhile family connection to Citadel, though it does not need the franchise to make sense.
What is Citadel: Honey Bunny about?
Film stuntman Bunny recruits struggling actress Honey for a side job that pulls her into espionage, danger and betrayal. The story cuts between 1992, when their relationship and Honey’s entry into Bunny’s covert world take shape, and 2000, when estranged Honey and Bunny are drawn together again to protect their young daughter, Nadia. The official Prime Video listing describes the premise and lists six episodes.

Nadia is the direct bridge to the original Citadel: the child in this story grows up to be the character played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas. That connection gives the prequel a clear place in the franchise chronology, but the India-set series remains legible as its own story of two people whose dangerous work and private history collide.
Do Samantha and Varun Dhawan’s chemistry make the romance work?
The show’s selling point is not simply that Honey and Bunny are attractive leads, but that their relationship is meant to give the spy plot its emotional stakes. Varun Dhawan’s description of the series is apt: “Everything that happens is happening around the love story or the various relationships between the characters.” That is an actor’s account of the creative intention; on screen, the relationship lands most strongly when the action exposes trust, loyalty or old hurt, and less strongly when the script asks viewers to accept the force of their bond without enough dramatic development.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu is convincing in a demanding action role and gives Honey a firm center amid the shifting timelines. Dhawan grows into Bunny as the season progresses, though the writing does not always give either lead enough nuance to make the romance as affecting as its premise. Their connection has heat and history, but “smolder” can overpromise: the series delivers more convincingly on the idea of a shared past than on the sustained intimacy that would make every reunion beat resonate. Hindustan Times critic Abhimanyu Mathur similarly praised the leads’ establishment while noting that the script limits them (Hindustan Times review).
How well do the action and period setting work?
The action is among the series’ clearest strengths. Mathur describes it as stylish and visceral, and the physical set pieces generally give the spy work momentum rather than reducing it to gadget display. They are most effective when danger is personal—when a fight or escape puts a relationship, not just a mission, at risk. The series’ period identity also helps distinguish it from a generic international spy thriller: the 1990s setting folds the Hindi film industry into Honey’s route into Bunny’s world.

Samantha’s physical performance gives the action credibility, and the production’s polish supports the scale of the confrontations. Yet spectacle cannot fully compensate for thin characterization or familiar plot turns. The tone moves among espionage, romance, domestic drama, humor and film-industry nostalgia; those ingredients can give the series personality, but the transitions do not always feel seamless.
Does the two-timeline structure add suspense?
The 1992 and 2000 timelines give the story a useful dramatic contrast: one follows Honey and Bunny’s beginning, while the other shows the consequences of their separation and the danger surrounding Nadia. The structure also lets the series build a family-history mystery around a relationship whose outcome has already been shaped by years apart.

That design does not always produce surprise. As Mathur observes, predictable turns and sluggish stretches weaken the pace, and the audience can sometimes anticipate where revelations are heading before the characters catch up. The split timeline is strongest when it deepens the emotional meaning of a present-day choice; it is less effective when it delays information without creating much new tension.
Is the Citadel connection worth it?
For viewers who know the original Citadel, Nadia’s history gives the franchise link a personal purpose rather than making the series merely another branch of the same spy universe. For newcomers, that link is a bonus, not a prerequisite: the core conflict is Honey and Bunny’s attempt to protect their daughter amid the fallout of their past. The Indian setting, relationship focus and period texture provide enough identity for the series to stand on its own.

The franchise’s future also has a practical qualification. On April 16, 2025, TVLine reported Amazon MGM Studios’ statement that Honey Bunny would not continue as an individual series; storylines from the India and Italy installments would be woven into Citadel season two. That makes this a completed standalone installment whose threads are intended to feed the larger series, not the start of a separate ongoing run (TVLine).

Citadel: Honey Bunny is a lively, visually polished spy melodrama with a distinctive Indian setting and action that often carries real physical force. Its strongest asset is Samantha’s performance; its main limitation is that the writing does not consistently earn the emotional weight it asks viewers to place on Honey and Bunny. The show is worth watching for the action, period atmosphere and Nadia’s place in the franchise, but the romance and two-timeline plotting are less compelling than their premise promises.
