She apologized for using an anti-Asian slur, accepted the decision to remove her from the villa, and said threats against her family had gone beyond accountability.
Cierra Ortega addressed her abrupt departure from Love Island USA in a July 9, 2025 accountability video, after older social-media posts attributed to her resurfaced online. Reports said the posts included an anti-Asian slur. Ortega apologized to people she had hurt and to the Asian community, said she accepted the decision to remove her from the villa, and described the online response against her family as harassment that had gone beyond accountability.
Why Cierra Ortega left Love Island USA
Ortega left the Season 7 villa during the July 6 episode. Narrator Iain Stirling said she had departed “due to a personal situation.” At the time, the show did not publicly detail the reason, and a spokesperson declined to comment to the Associated Press.
The timing followed the circulation of screenshots that reporting attributed to older Instagram posts from 2015 and 2023 or 2024. The material was reported to contain an anti-Asian slur used in comments about Ortega’s eyes or facial appearance. Because the original posts were no longer available for direct verification, the screenshots, wording, and dates should be understood as claims reported by news organizations rather than as independently authenticated primary material.

Several reputable reports connected the resurfaced posts and resulting backlash to Ortega’s departure. However, Peacock’s initial on-air explanation remained limited to the phrase “personal situation.” There was not, in the available public record, a detailed formal disciplinary announcement from the network explaining the removal.
What Ortega said in her accountability video
On July 9, Ortega posted a video lasting nearly five minutes along with a written statement. She described the video as an attempt at accountability and apologized to the people she had hurt, “most importantly” the Asian community.
Ortega said she had not understood the history and pain associated with the term when she used it. She also acknowledged that not intending to hurt anyone did not excuse her ignorance. Her statement emphasized that her future conduct would matter more than an apology.
Her explanation should not be reduced to a blanket denial that the material existed. Ortega accepted responsibility for using the offensive term, while disputing the authenticity or interpretation of some separate screenshots and allegations about what she did after someone confronted her.

According to Ortega, a follower had previously told her that a related post was hurtful. She said she deleted it, educated herself, and removed the term from her vocabulary. She also said she agreed with the network’s decision to remove her and characterized the consequence as deserved punishment.
Ortega’s claims about threats and harassment
While Ortega’s parents were posting about the controversy, they said the family understood why viewers were upset and recognized the importance of accountability. They also asked people to stop sending threats, attacks, and cruel messages, arguing that the online response had crossed the line from criticism into harassment.
In her July 9 video, Ortega described additional harassment directed at her family. She referred to death threats and alleged that ICE had been called on family members. Those claims are attributed to Ortega; the available reporting did not independently substantiate each incident.
The distinction matters. Public criticism of racist or discriminatory conduct is not the same as threats, doxxing, targeted intimidation, or attempts to endanger relatives. The reported family response acknowledged the seriousness of the underlying controversy while asking viewers not to inflict further harm.

Ortega’s relationship with Nic Vansteenberghe
Ortega entered Season 7 as a bombshell and quickly coupled up with Nic Vansteenberghe. The pair had recently described themselves as “closed off,” according to the Associated Press. Her departure left Vansteenberghe single, and he later recoupled with Olandria Carthen.
There was no indication in the available reporting that Ortega and Vansteenberghe reconciled after her exit. Peacock’s official reunion recap later said Vansteenberghe had not spoken with Ortega since leaving the villa.
Why the controversy drew particular attention
Ortega’s exit came during a season that had already faced scrutiny over resurfaced racist remarks by another Islander, Yulissa Escobar. That earlier case formed part of a wider conversation about reality-TV casting, contestants’ historical social-media activity, and the responsibility of production companies to assess old online material.
The two incidents should not be treated as identical. They involved different material, different contestants, and different points in the season. The broader context is relevant because viewers and commentators were already closely watching how Love Island USA handled offensive remarks that emerged after casting.

Why Cierra Ortega did not attend the reunion
On TikTok comments reported on July 27 and 28, Ortega said she would not attend the Season 7 reunion. She described the decision as part of moving on and again acknowledged that her experience with the show had ended negatively because of her own actions.
Peacock’s official reunion recap, published August 26, listed 27 participating Islanders and did not include Ortega. The recap also noted that Vansteenberghe had not spoken with her since leaving the villa.
Season 7 ultimately concluded on July 13, with Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales winning. The Associated Press described Ortega’s exit as occurring roughly a week before the finale and linked it to the resurfacing of posts containing an anti-Asian slur.
Where to watch Love Island USA
Love Island USA is a Peacock series, although episode and reunion availability can vary by country, subscription tier, and the date of access. Viewers looking for the season or reunion can watch Love Island USA on Peacock, the show’s official U.S. streaming platform. Watching the program does not resolve or excuse the conduct discussed above; this is simply the official viewing information.

What is confirmed—and what remains limited
| Question | What the public record supports |
|---|---|
| Did Ortega leave the villa? | Yes. The July 6 episode announced that she had left because of a “personal situation.” |
| What prompted the backlash? | News reports connected the backlash to circulated screenshots attributed to older social-media posts containing an anti-Asian slur. |
| Did Peacock publish a detailed explanation? | Not in the initial announcement available in the reporting. The show used a deliberately nonspecific explanation. |
| Did Ortega apologize? | Yes. In her July 9 video and statement, she apologized to those she hurt and to the Asian community, accepted responsibility, and said she agreed with her removal. |
| Were all alleged screenshots verified? | No. The original posts were unavailable for direct verification, and Ortega disputed some separate screenshots or interpretations. |
| Did she attend the reunion? | No. She said she would not attend, and Peacock’s official participant recap did not list her. |
The clearest account is therefore a limited one: resurfaced posts attributed to Ortega triggered intense backlash while she was filming in Fiji; she left the villa under the show’s “personal situation” wording; she later accepted responsibility for using an anti-Asian slur and agreed that her removal was warranted; and she did not return for the Season 7 reunion. Claims about specific threats against her family remain allegations attributed to Ortega or her parents, not independently verified facts.
