Chromecast with Google TV is discontinued as a current Google hardware product. Google ended production and replaced it with the $99.99 Google TV Streamer (4K). The older Chromecast devices can still work, and remaining units may appear through retailers and marketplace sellers, but buyers should treat them as clearance or third-party purchases rather than a normal current-generation launch.
The 2020 Chromecast with Google TV (4K) remains the better match for a 4K television, Dolby Vision, or a compact HDMI-dongle design. The 2022 Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is suitable for a 1080p television and may be worthwhile at a genuinely low price. For most new buyers, however, the Google TV Streamer is the safer long-term purchase because it is the official successor, has more storage and memory, includes Ethernet, and has a later published security-update horizon.
What happened to Chromecast with Google TV?
Google announced the Google TV Streamer (4K) on August 6, 2024, describing it as the replacement for Chromecast. Availability began on September 24, 2024, at a U.S. price of $99.99. Google later confirmed that Chromecast production was ending, with remaining units available only while supplies lasted.
The Google Store subsequently marked both Chromecast with Google TV models as unavailable. That means a current listing at another retailer does not necessarily indicate ongoing Google production. It may be old inventory, a marketplace listing, or a product offered at a price substantially different from the original retail price.

Availability and pricing are volatile, so verify the seller, condition, delivery date, and return policy immediately before ordering.
Chromecast with Google TV (4K)
Best Buy still has a product page for the Snow Chromecast with Google TV (4K), model GA01919-US and SKU 12377596. The listing captured in the research was sold and shipped by the marketplace seller YEAHER, Inc. for $141.15. That is far above the device’s original U.S. launch price of $49.99 and should not be treated as Google’s current MSRP.
If you specifically want the discontinued dongle, check the seller and condition carefully before buying the Chromecast with Google TV 4K. A high marketplace price can make the official Google TV Streamer a better value, even though it is not physically the same type of device.

Home Depot has carried a product page for the Snow Chromecast with Google TV (HD), model GA03131-US, with a captured price of $29.99. That price and availability require live confirmation because remaining-stock listings can disappear or change.
The Chromecast with Google TV HD is the sensible version only for a 1080p television or for a buyer who has a specific reason to prefer the smaller dongle. It is not a current replacement for the 4K model, and its lower resolution cannot be upgraded through software.
Walmart and other marketplaces
Walmart has product pages for both the HD and 4K versions, but marketplace listings can change seller, condition, price, and stock without notice. Use them as discovery paths rather than proof that a particular unit is guaranteed to be available at a particular price.

Actual output is limited by both the Chromecast and the television. A 4K Chromecast cannot make a 1080p television display 4K, and a television without Dolby Vision support cannot show Dolby Vision simply because the streaming device supports it.

Which model should you buy?
Choose the 4K model if:
- You have a 4K television.
- You want Dolby Vision support.
- You need 4K HDR output at up to 60 frames per second.
- You specifically prefer a compact HDMI dongle instead of a tabletop box.
- You find legitimate remaining stock at a price clearly below, or at least competitive with, the Google TV Streamer.
Choose the HD model if:
- Your television is limited to 1080p.
- You want the lowest-cost Chromecast with Google TV and find a new, reasonably priced unit.
- You understand that it is discontinued hardware and are comfortable with its shorter feature set.
Choose Google TV Streamer instead if:

Latest firmware and update status
Google’s firmware release notes, updated June 23, 2026, list build UTTC.250917.004 for both Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD). The listed changes include the October 2025 Android security patch, bug fixes, and performance improvements.
Google says updates are staged, so the same build may not appear on every device at the same time. If your Chromecast has not received the build, that does not necessarily mean the device is malfunctioning; staged distribution can delay availability.
Important difference between firmware availability and promised support
Google’s connected-home security table lists the following minimum security-update dates:
- Chromecast with Google TV (4K): September 30, 2025, based on its September 30, 2020 release date.
- Chromecast with Google TV (HD): September 22, 2027, based on its September 22, 2022 release date.
- Google TV Streamer (4K): September 24, 2029, based on its September 24, 2024 release date.
The firmware page still lists a production build for both Chromecast models, but the 4K model’s published five-year minimum date has already passed. These facts should not be conflated: a device can still receive a listed firmware build without Google promising a particular future update schedule.

The most precise buying guidance is therefore that the HD model has a published security-update horizon through September 22, 2027, while the 4K model’s published five-year minimum horizon ended September 30, 2025. Do not assume that either model will receive a specific future Android version, Google TV feature, or security patch unless Google announces it.
What the Google TV Streamer adds
Google TV Streamer is not merely a renamed Chromecast dongle. Its principal hardware and platform differences include:
- More storage: 32GB, compared with the much smaller storage capacity associated with the Chromecast generation.
- More memory: Google describes it as having twice the memory of the prior Chromecast generation.
- Built-in Ethernet: wired networking is available directly on the device rather than through a separate Chromecast power adapter.
- Smart-home connectivity: Matter support and a built-in Thread border router.
- Updated remote: a customizable button and Find My Remote feature.

The trade-off is physical design. Chromecast with Google TV is convenient when the television’s HDMI ports or surrounding space favor a dongle. Google TV Streamer occupies space on a shelf or table and connects to the television with HDMI.

Replacement voice remote
Google sells a Voice Remote for Chromecast with Google TV separately for $19.99 in the cited Store listing. It is intended for Chromecast with Google TV, and Google’s support documentation explains how to pair a replacement remote with either Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.
For an existing owner, a Chromecast with Google TV replacement remote is more targeted than replacing an otherwise functional streaming device. Check compatibility before ordering, especially when a listing uses generic language such as “Google TV remote.”
Ethernet adapter
The Ethernet Adapter for Chromecast with Google TV provides both wired Internet connectivity and power. It is useful when Wi-Fi is unreliable, the television is far from the router, or consistent network performance matters more than the convenience of wireless setup.

Power adapters and batteries
Generic power adapters and AAA batteries can be practical replacements, but they are compatibility-sensitive. Confirm the required power specifications and connector before buying a replacement power supply. For the remote, use the correct AAA batteries and verify that the listing is intended for the Chromecast voice remote rather than a different Google or Android TV remote.

- Match the device to the television. Buy 4K for a 4K display or Dolby Vision requirement; buy HD only for a 1080p setup or a clearly stated budget reason.
- Check the seller. Marketplace pages may be sold and shipped by a third party rather than Google or the named retailer.
- Check condition. Confirm whether the unit is new, open-box, refurbished, used, or missing its original power accessories.
- Compare against the replacement. A heavily inflated price for old 4K stock is difficult to justify when Google TV Streamer is available at $99.99.
