Will Reeve said his family kept specific medical matters off the dinner-table conversation. Apart from that narrow boundary, he recalled, the children could talk about anything. He shared the memory while reflecting with his siblings on their family and the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

What was the Reeve family’s dinner-table rule?

“Whether it was good news, bad news, scary news, dinner was family time,” Will Reeve told ABC News. He said the one subject the children were not allowed to raise at the table was “specific medical stuff.” As he put it, “Could be anything else.” ABC News reported Will’s recollection.

The restriction was about specific medical discussion during dinner—not a blanket ban on talking about the accident, difficult feelings, or serious subjects in every setting. Will described the meal as lively and welcoming: his mother cooked, his parents sat together at the head of the table, and friends sometimes dropped by.

How the rule fits the family’s story

Christopher Reeve was paralyzed after a 1995 horse-riding accident, according to the Associated Press. Will was two at the time; his half-siblings Matthew and Alexandra were 15 and 11, respectively, ABC News reported.

The siblings discussed family memories in connection with Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. The Associated Press describes the documentary as drawing on home videos, interviews, and movie clips. The children said they wanted to show their father’s complexities rather than present a sanitized portrait. The Associated Press reported on the film and the family’s reflections.

Will’s account is a personal recollection of how his family made space for ordinary time together amid serious medical circumstances. It is not presented as a rule other families should follow.
