Their publicly reported careers took different paths—film and media, law and technology policy, and broadcast journalism—but the available accounts do not establish that their private lives or grief were “drastically different.” All three have also helped tell the fuller story of both parents, including through the 2024 documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.
Who are Christopher Reeve’s children?
Matthew and Alexandra Reeve are Christopher’s children with his earlier partner, Gae Exton. Will Reeve is his son with Dana Reeve. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation identifies all three as Christopher’s surviving children and says they are involved with the foundation.
The siblings were at different ages when their father was injured. In an ABC News interview in 2024, Alexandra recalled that she was 11 and Matthew was 15 when Christopher’s 1995 accident occurred. Will was two and turned three during his father’s intensive-care stay.
What happened to Christopher and Dana Reeve?
Christopher’s injury and advocacy
On May 27, 1995, Christopher injured his spinal cord in a horseback-riding competition. After rehabilitation, he used his public profile to advocate for faster spinal cord injury research, patient representation, better quality of life, and federal support for research. The Foundation says he died of heart failure on October 10, 2004, aged 52. Its biography quotes Christopher recalling Dana’s support after the injury: “You’re still you. And I love you.”

Dana’s caregiving and death
Dana was a caregiver and public figure as well as a mother. The Guardian reported in October 2024 that she was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer in 2005 and died in March 2006, about 18 months after Christopher. Will has emphasized that his mother belongs in any account of his father: “You can’t tell the full story of Christopher Reeve without telling the story of Dana Reeve,” he said in a Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation article.
The losses unfolded at different points in the children’s lives. The Associated Press reported that Will was 12 when Christopher died, and that family and close friends helped raise him after Dana’s death. Will described himself as “pretty well-adjusted.” That account does not justify ranking the siblings’ grief or drawing conclusions about their private lives.

What were the siblings doing professionally in 2024?
These are roles reported in 2024 coverage, not independently verified descriptions of their positions in 2026.
| Sibling | Career described in 2024 reporting |
|---|---|
| Matthew Reeve | Writer, producer, and director |
| Alexandra Reeve Givens | Washington attorney and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology |
| Will Reeve | ABC News correspondent |
The contrast is real in their publicly reported work: Matthew’s career is in film and media, Alexandra’s in law and technology policy, and Will’s in broadcast journalism. It is not evidence that their lives as a whole are opposites.
How did the children shape their parents’ documentary legacy?
Matthew, Alexandra, and Will shared family archives and participated in Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. In 2024 Associated Press reporting, the siblings said they wanted a portrait that included their father’s complexities rather than presenting him as a one-dimensional hero.
Matthew described the aim in a Foundation article: “We wanted whoever made this to create a 360-degree portrait of a human who was incredible and flawed, who was heroic and brave, who had fears and worries.” Alexandra reflected on family life through the crisis: “It was a terrifying time, and we knew what was at stake. But at the same time, we saw what it was to try and create joy, to be together as a family. And I think that will resonate for a lot of people.”
That fuller portrait includes Dana’s work as well as Christopher’s fame. The Foundation describes Dana as a founder of the National Paralysis Resource Center in 2002. In a 2024 article, the Foundation reported cumulative figures of approximately $145 million raised for spinal cord injury research, more than 130,850 people helped by the Center, and over $44 million distributed in Quality of Life Grants. These are the Foundation’s reported figures, not independently audited totals.
The siblings’ public contribution is not that they share identical careers or experiences. It is that they have helped make space for a family story that includes Christopher’s advocacy and vulnerabilities, Dana’s caregiving and public work, and the children’s memories of both parents.
