Will Reeve remembered his mother, Dana, singing around the family home—and said he wishes he had asked her to sing more. In a conversation with Diane Sawyer about the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, he described the memory as a source of safety, happiness, normalcy and togetherness.
Why Will Reeve became emotional remembering Dana
Will’s recollection was not about a public performance. It was an ordinary part of family life: Dana singing at home. “Hindsight is 20/20, but I wish that I had asked her to sing more, because when I think about her, that’s where I go … the quiet moments of safety and happiness and normalcy and togetherness,” he told ABC News. ABC News reported that Will also spoke about feeling alone after his parents’ deaths, even with his siblings and extended family around him.

Dana died in 2006, when Will was 13. His father, Christopher Reeve, had died two years earlier. The losses left Will without either parent during his teenage years, giving the memory of his mother’s voice particular weight.
How Dana’s care and music remain part of the family
Dana had planned for Will’s care: she arranged for him to live with the family of his best friend, while his older siblings, Matthew and Alexandra, helped support him. The family’s memories also include shared dinners and music. Will has carried one part of that music into the next generation, singing to his siblings’ children the lullaby Dana sang to him.

The conversation with Will and his siblings was part of ABC News’ coverage of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a documentary built around family archives and interviews as well as Christopher Reeve’s public life. The Associated Press reported that the Reeve children wanted a candid account that showed their father’s strengths and weaknesses, not only his public image. Will put the family emphasis plainly: “There’s a universal story in here, and it’s not about a famous person in a cape and tights. It’s about a family.” The Associated Press covered the documentary and the siblings’ approach to telling that story.
Christopher Reeve sustained a spinal cord injury in a 1995 horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He died in 2004. Dana, his wife and Will’s mother, died on March 6, 2006, aged 44, after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. ABC News reported that the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation had invested $140 million in research; the figure was attributed to the foundation’s website in that 2024 report.
