Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey adapts Homer’s ancient epic as a mythic action film. It opened in theaters on July 17, 2026. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, with Tom Holland as his son Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as his wife Penelope. Universal described the production as the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
What Nolan’s The Odyssey is about
The film is based on Homer’s Odyssey, the epic poem about Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan War. Nolan directed from his own screenplay and produced the film with Emma Thomas through their production company, Syncopy. The source material is familiar, but the adaptation is not presented as a scene-by-scene transcription: reported choices show Nolan drawing on other classical works as well as the poem.

Nolan described the story to The Associated Press as “the ultimate adventure story.” In an NBCUniversal feature, he called it “not a story—it’s the story.” Those remarks convey the scale of the project, but they do not establish that the film includes every episode or follows every detail of Homer’s poem.

NBCUniversal quoted Holland describing the production’s scale and its emphasis on practical authenticity. His comment concerns the experience of making the film; it should not be taken to mean that every effect or element was created practically.

How Nolan reshaped the ancient story
In a July 9, 2026 report, The Associated Press described Nolan’s approach as earthy and aimed at challenging familiar Hollywood conventions for depicting antiquity. Among the adaptation choices reported:
- Characters use colloquial language and American accents.
- The film blends material from Homer’s Iliad, Virgil’s Aeneid and Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, alongside the Odyssey.
- The Trojan Horse is depicted without wheels.
These are reported choices, not a complete account of the screenplay. They indicate that Nolan’s version draws from a wider classical tradition while making its own decisions about tone and imagery.

Where the film was made
The production traveled through six countries, according to AP. NBCUniversal lists Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland and Scotland among the filming locations. AP described several specific settings and how they were created:
- Troy was built in Morocco.
- The Cyclops cave was filmed in the foothills of Greece.
- Iceland’s black sands represented Hades.
- Favignana, near Sicily, stood in for Ithaca.
AP also reported that the production used a real ship, the Draken, modified to evoke the Mycenaean period. These location and production details offer a sense of how the film approached its ancient settings; they do not mean every location shown on screen was filmed in the place it represents.

IMAX cameras and theatrical formats
Universal and NBCUniversal promoted The Odyssey as the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. That claim concerns how the film was shot; it is distinct from the format in which a particular theater presents it. Official publicity promoted IMAX, IMAX 70mm, 70mm, 35mm, Dolby Cinema and other premium large-format presentations.
For the initial release, AP reported that 70mm IMAX screenings were available in about 32 North American theaters. The figure is an approximate historical count for that engagement, not a current screen count. Other theatrical options included digital IMAX and additional large formats. Which format a viewer could attend depended on the theater and location.

The Odyssey opened theatrically on July 17, 2026. That date has passed. The available information here does not establish current showtimes, a confirmed re-release, current digital rental or purchase terms, or availability through a particular streaming subscription. A Universal search listing labeled the film “Buy or Rent Now On Digital,” but that listing alone does not confirm current retailer terms or subscription access.
If you want to compare theatrical presentations, check the specific theater’s current listing for the format—such as IMAX 70mm, digital IMAX, 70mm, 35mm or Dolby Cinema—rather than assuming a format is still showing because it was offered during the initial release.
