Christmas in July is an optional, Christmas-themed celebration held in the middle of the year—not an official second Christmas. In Australia and other Southern Hemisphere countries, July is winter, making roast dinners, fireplaces, warm drinks, lights, markets, and snowy Christmas imagery feel seasonally natural. In the United States and other Northern Hemisphere settings, July is summer, so the occasion is usually a playful party theme, a movie season, a shopping promotion, a fundraiser, or a reason to gather before December becomes crowded.
Christmas in July is an optional, Christmas-themed celebration held in the middle of the year—not an official second Christmas or a universally standardized holiday.
There is no required date, menu, religious practice, or ritual. Some people celebrate on July 25; others choose a convenient weekend or participate in a festival lasting several days. The point is to borrow Christmas’s familiar language of food, generosity, nostalgia, decoration, entertainment, and togetherness at a different time of year.

- In the Southern Hemisphere, it can recreate a traditional winter Christmas during the actual winter season. Australia’s July celebrations often feature hearty food, festive clothing, markets, lights, hot drinks, and winter scenery.
- In the Northern Hemisphere, it is generally a summer Christmas: an intentionally out-of-season party, a Christmas movie marathon, an early decorating or shopping event, or a community and charity gathering.
- Everywhere, it can simply be a low-pressure excuse to spend time with friends and family and enjoy a familiar festive atmosphere without the demands of December.
In Australia, Christmas in July is an additional celebration, not a replacement for Christmas Day on December 25. It gives people an opportunity to enjoy the winter associations often attached to Christmas in films, books, and Northern Hemisphere traditions, while Australia’s actual December holiday remains a summer celebration.
How did Christmas in July start?
There is no universally accepted inventor or single starting point. The safest history is a layered one: the broad idea appeared in more than one place, while Australia’s Blue Mountains became strongly associated with the organized modern tourism tradition known as Yulefest.
The Blue Mountains and the Yulefest story
A widely repeated Australian account places the beginning of the Blue Mountains’ modern Yulefest tradition in July 1980. According to the story, Irish visitors staying near Katoomba encouraged a snowy, traditional Christmas dinner. The region’s cold weather—and occasional snow—made roast food, plum pudding, decorations, carols, and fireside celebrations especially appealing.
That story is important to the identity of Australian Yulefest, but it should not be presented as settled proof that one group invented Christmas in July. Australian food-history references identify earlier mentions and suggest that the hospitality industry’s organized Blue Mountains version became established around 1980. In other words, 1980 is a useful milestone for the modern tourism tradition, not an uncontested birth date for the entire idea.

Historical summaries refer to Australian Christmas-in-July mentions and children’s parties before 1980. There is also a documented Christmas-in-July stage event at Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, on July 24 and 25, 1933. That event does not prove that the North Carolina celebration created the tradition either, but it demonstrates that the concept existed in the United States decades before its modern commercial popularity.
The phrase had also entered American cultural usage by the mid-twentieth century. The Library of Congress records the 1940 film Christmas in July and catalogs a 1946 editorial cartoon using the same phrase. Those records establish the expression’s cultural presence; they do not show that the film or cartoon invented the celebration.
The most accurate summary is therefore this: Christmas in July has multiple early precedents. Australia’s Blue Mountains are closely associated with the modern Yulefest version, especially the frequently repeated 1980 Katoomba story, but the broader idea appeared earlier and in more than one place.

Why does July make sense?
In Australia and the Southern Hemisphere
Australia’s December is summer. A traditional Northern Hemisphere Christmas menu of roast meat, rich pudding, hot drinks, and heavy desserts can feel out of step with hot weather, even when the cultural imagery remains familiar. July supplies the missing winter conditions.

That makes Christmas in July a way to enjoy a classic winter Christmas without pretending that December in Australia is cold. A July gathering might include a roast dinner, a crackling fire, warm lighting, woollen clothing, mulled drinks, Christmas markets, or—where local conditions allow—snowy scenery. It is an extra seasonal experience, not a claim that the December celebration is somehow inauthentic.
In the United States and other Northern Hemisphere settings
July is usually hot in the Northern Hemisphere, so the contrast becomes part of the fun. Christmas in July may mean Christmas lights beside a swimming pool, a holiday film after a barbecue, a summer office party, or a tongue-in-cheek attempt to start December preparations early.
The format can also serve practical purposes. Families may have more availability in July than in December. Retailers and media companies can use the theme to introduce holiday products and programming before the main shopping season. Community groups can hold a fundraiser when charitable appeals are less concentrated. A family can create a small tradition without reproducing the expense and pressure of December.
What does Christmas in July look like today?
Modern celebrations combine the atmosphere of a Christmas market with food, entertainment, shopping, and visual spectacle. They range from a dinner at home to a destination festival.

The official Christmas in July Festival also describes a Sydney tradition that began in The Rocks in 2017 and returned to Sydney and Canberra in 2026. Visit Victoria presents the season through food markets, shopping, gifts, and festive clothing.
In the United States, Hallmark’s official 2026 Christmas in July schedule included four new Saturday-night premieres—Christmas Under Construction, O Little Christmas Market, Snowbound for the Holidays, and Love Under the Mistletoe—alongside a wider month-long holiday schedule and references to Hallmark+. That illustrates how the occasion has developed into a media season, not merely a private joke about putting up a tree in summer.

Why celebrate Christmas in July this year?
You do not need a historical, religious, or commercial reason. The strongest case is that July offers a useful opportunity to gather and enjoy a familiar atmosphere with less pressure.
- Create a midyear reset. A dinner, party, or market visit gives an ordinary month a clear occasion and brings people together before the end-of-year rush.
- Match the menu to the weather. Southern Hemisphere hosts can serve roast meals, puddings, baked vegetables, and warm drinks when those foods are genuinely comfortable to eat.
- Make up for a missed December tradition. Travel, illness, work, family changes, or competing commitments can make December difficult. July offers a smaller second chance to gather.
- Turn entertainment into an event. A movie marathon, festive playlist, baking afternoon, or board-game night feels more memorable when it has a theme.
- Keep the celebration at any scale. It can be a dinner for two, a family breakfast, an office potluck, a neighborhood market, or a multi-day public festival.
- Separate generosity from the December rush. A July food drive, toy collection, or donation campaign can receive attention outside the crowded end-of-year charity season.
How to host a Christmas in July celebration
Start with the weather and the people attending rather than copying a fixed Christmas template. In a cold climate, lean into warmth. In a hot climate, make the seasonal contrast deliberate. In either case, set a budget and keep the event smaller than December if that is what makes it enjoyable.
1. Host a winter-style dinner
A traditional winter-style menu might include roast meat or a vegetarian centerpiece, potatoes, gravy, baked vegetables, pudding, and warm drinks. A potluck distributes the cost and preparation, while a simplified one-pot meal can be more comfortable for a small group.
If your July weather is warm, do not force a heavy meal. Use a shorter menu, serve food outdoors, or reinterpret the theme with a cold dessert, seasonal produce, and one unmistakably festive centerpiece.
2. Build a Christmas-market evening
Use string lights, small wooden or paper stalls, handmade gifts, baked goods, warm drinks, background music, and a few simple activities. You do not need a large venue: separate tables can become individual stalls, and a living room or backyard can suggest a miniature winter village.
If you are looking for Christmas in July decorations, ordinary Christmas lights, stockings, ornaments, table décor, and a small artificial tree are usually more useful than a supposedly standardized July-only product. The event has no official decoration kit; adapt the materials you already own to the atmosphere you want.
3. Plan a movie night
Choose a double feature, a favorite classic, family films, or a themed television lineup. Add popcorn, cookies, hot chocolate, or summer refreshments depending on the weather. A physical DVD or Blu-ray can be convenient for a planned movie night, while streaming may be simpler for households that already use a licensed service.
For Christmas in July movies, check your local listings and licensed streaming catalogs rather than assuming that a particular title or service is available in your country. Rights, catalogs, release dates, and subscription arrangements change. Hallmark’s 2026 schedule shows how extensive holiday programming can become in July, but Hallmark’s lineup is not proof that every listed title is available everywhere or on every service.

There is no requirement to imitate an Australian winter festival—or to pretend that a July celebration must involve snow.

A simple planning checklist
- Choose a date that works for the group; July 25 is optional.
- Decide whether the event is winter-themed, summer-themed, or deliberately mixed.
- Set a spending limit and choose a meal format: host-prepared, potluck, picnic, or catered.
- Select one main activity, such as a dinner, market, film, gift exchange, or fundraiser.
- Use reusable decorations where possible.
- Check dietary requirements, accessibility, weather, and heating or cooling needs.
- If attending a public festival, verify the current dates, tickets, transport, and cancellation arrangements.
- If watching films, verify regional licensing and catalog availability in advance.
Is Christmas in July a real holiday?
It is real as a cultural and social event, but it is not generally an official public holiday. It has no single worldwide authority, required observance, or universally accepted date. Public festivals, businesses, broadcasters, charities, families, and community groups use the idea in different ways.
That flexibility is the reason it has lasted. Christmas in July can be a winter celebration in Australia, a summer novelty in the United States, a tourism event, a retail theme, a television season, or a private family ritual without needing one definition to displace the others.
The bottom line
Christmas in July is not a second official Christmas. It is a deliberate midyear opportunity to enjoy Christmas’s food, lights, entertainment, generosity, nostalgia, and togetherness in a form that suits your climate and your schedule.
In Australia, July makes a winter-feeling Christmas seasonally convincing. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer contrast makes it playful and adaptable. Its history is layered rather than singular: the Blue Mountains’ Yulefest tradition is central to the modern Australian story, but earlier Australian references and a documented 1933 North Carolina event show that no single origin claim explains everything.
Celebrate with a roast dinner, a market-style evening, a movie night, a summer barbecue, a charity project, or simply a small gathering of people you care about. The date is flexible; the point is making room for a little festive connection before December arrives.
